Product description

Product Description

Now a celebrated war hero, Captain Kat Falcone is back at the helm of HMS Lightning…and up against near-impossible odds. After an ill-timed outburst almost ends her career, Kat is handed command of a deep-strike mission into enemy space. The objective is to gather intelligence and distract the hostile Theocracy while the Commonwealth prepares its counteroffensive.

The chances for success are slim—and for survival even slimmer.

Armed with a ragtag fleet of outdated starships, a few loyal officers, and a skeleton crew of refugees, Kat knows the Royal Navy expects her to fail. But failure almost certainly means death—or worse, as the Theocracy does not treat prisoners kindly. Pitted against the enemy defenses of her old nemesis Admiral Junayd, there is no room for error. And with a spy hidden aboard her ship, Kat will need more than her wits to survive. Can Kat enter the lion’s den, strike a blow for the Commonwealth, and escape with her life?

“There are some things we should refuse to @#&*ing tolerate.” Although not all of those things belong to the Theocracy - something the smugglers and pirates understand, which is why I can't help rooting for them a bit. Things like protectionism and nepotism that creep into any society that allows people to claim advantages based on who their ancestors were and what they had done, as opposed to being judged by their own merits. Kat begins to see it. "She knew more than she wanted to know about the endless tussle for supremacy in Tyre City, the willingness to stoop to new lows just to gain a temporary advantage." And her Nemesis, Admiral Junayd, begins to see his own side if not yet in the true light, then at least close to it. And this political message that would be boring and platitudinous if phrased just like that, planely, instead is given with enough subtlety as to not turn the good sci-fi actioner into a lecture on geopolitical strategy - at which none of us is any better than the others.
Towards the end, I suddenly got the nagging feeling that Kat's father, the Duke Falcone himself is the real high-level traitor playing both sides, keeping his options open, and so responsible for the Cadiz debacle described in the first book and mentioned here. Is that true? Time will tell, if there are more installments to come. But if the author is reading this review, I encourage him to consider this idea.

This was a great read, I finished it in one day. It's got everything I like in my sf, fleet actions, daring raids and a dash of intrigue. Kat is a great character and her supporting cast is given enough space to bring the story to life. Admiral Junayd made for a convincing oponent for Kat and I didn't see his fate coming. The foreshadowing of events to come particularly in the political arena make me eager for Chris to hurry up and write the next one. I rank this series up with the early David Weber material.

An engaging story, liked the degree of character depth & development, set in a believable future universe, with political complexities. Looking forward to the next one.
