Fairchild is a well written story with memorable and realistic (human frailties included) characters. The reader follows the growing up of both the hero and heroine and then their romantic and bumpy journey on the way to HEA. It is a completely clean read and very suitable for YA readers - the heroine is only 17. The manners and speech of the time were fairly well represented and it was refreshing to have the hero come from the "other side of the tracks" for once! Both the working class and aristocratic attitudes were well portrayed and the reader could see how the heroine was struggling with being in the middle of both. A great read for adults and young adults alike.

I don’t normally like to read historical romances as they can very very similar in theme, but this one was so well written that I had to finish it once I started! 😍👍

Interesting tale of life in earlier times .. manners, etiquette and expectations are all different but some things remain the same. Lovely read with a good ending.

The concept was fine but by the third or fourth chapter I couldn't gain any enthusiasm for the characters.

Unbelievable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2018Verified Purchase
Readers of Regency romance will probably enjoy this book, but it did not work for me. I usually enjoy this type of story, but it just did not ring true for me and a story has to be a little believable at least. Upper class in Regency times did not 'bring out' base born daughters into high society.
The characters did not develop enough, some flitting in briefly for no reason and I did not like Sophy's character at all. It was completely out of character to pretend she was a legitimate child in the first place, given her headstrong character. No not for me.

Romance across the class and moral divide

Enjoyed the characters and the twist in the story. An easy read with some in sight into the plight of illegitimate children of the aristocracy at that time. Snobbery and hypocrisy were the order of the day. A happy ending as expected. Suitable for all ages.

Good traditional tale

A tale of the oppressive society for women of the past. Formalities, expectations, class, constriction, etiquette and history. I very much enjoyed this book and if you favour a Jane Austen style story you will find this a very good fit.

Loved it! Was bastardy really so surmountable?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2017Verified Purchase
Would Lady Fairchild really overcome her original view of her husband's love child? Would a bastard be received into London society? Just a bit unconvinced about Sophy's character. Nevertheless happy to see that 'class' in the book was less important than it probably really was.

A really enjoyable read that I could not put down, read the whole thing in one sitting. Hope the sequels are as good.
