Product Description

Markus Reeves is sucking. Big-time. Toiling away on a minor-league hockey team hundreds of miles away from home, he's watching his dreams of an NHL career fade away. Add in the lingering guilt he has over the dramatic demise of his relationship with college girlfriend, Mekena, and he's a mess on and off the ice.

But the family of his heart, the Sinclairs, won't let Markus suffer any longer. When he arrives himself back in Nashville for a trial run on the Assassins, it feels like his life may be making a turn for the better. If only he could get Mekena to forgive him...

Mekena Preston has been hurting since fleeing Nashville following the horror of Markus's betrayal with her sister. Now a professional photographer, Mekena finds herself in the same place at the same time with Markus to celebrate Lucy and Benji Paxton's wedding. Neither of them has been able to move on—and they're starting to wonder if they really want to.

They're headed for a face-off at the altar unless they can confront their past and unearth the truth about what really happened on that fateful night.

This was a lovely second chance romance. It was the first book by Toni Aleo that I have read but I will be reading more of this series, 'Faceoff at the Altar' is actually book 9 in The Assassins Series but is also a standalone. I enjoyed the writing style, the plot but most of all I loved the characters. Can't wait to find out more about them all in other books from the series.

This is the story of Mekena, a wedding photographer, and Markus, a struggling hockey player, they previously dated and disastrously split while in college. They now have another chance to follow their hearts. Things started with them avoiding each other although they both want to be closer to the other. As they start to move forward they are faced with challenges and tragedy, but their love is stronger than life can throw them.

Reviewed for Amo and Sarah's Book Corner.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed 28 December 2016

I love absolutely love Toni Also. I love the Assassin series and have since book one. Yet, I find myself with the last two books not to excited. Yet all of that was going to change because she wrote Markus Reeves and he'll I fell hard for him.
This being Markus` story it fell felt. We didn't really know the relationship between him and Makena we knew he f`ed up but the falling in love part was just implied and glanced over. I wanted more, I wanted all of him. Yet, I was skimming thirty percent into the book. It dragged on for me and I found reasons to put the book down.
Do I still love Toni Also...of course but I think the series is falling short and I want the emotions she gave to me in the previous, earlier books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in the book and boring! 5 January 2017

I love this author and series but this book just didn't cut it. It was so boring it took me 4 days to read it. Both Markus and McKena are likeable but she is such a weak character, never thinks she is good enough for anyone or anything and Markus spends his whole time trying to convince her she is worth it. Ditch the cat! Didn't add anything to the story unless you are a cat lover. The author could have spent more time on specifically Markus's storyline with Skylar giving it more attention as a social issue that isn't written about or in the media. The author touched on it and how it effected Markus but could have shown him going through more emotions and dealing with the issue. The book was full of repetitive thoughts and dialogues with the characters and just distracted from the story. The book could have been 100 pages shorter and the story would have been better. If this book was not part of the assassins series and included the Sinclairs I would have stopped reading it before half way through.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missed the mark for me. 5 January 2017

I want to start by saying I'm a HUGE Toni Aleo fan. I love the Assassins series. There hasn't been a single book in this series I DIDN'T like.

That being said, this one kind of missed the mark for me a little. I felt like it was really long and parts of it were simply fillers to make sure it ended with a certain amount of pages. I felt like Markus didn't try hard enough two years ago when he and Mekena first broke up. I felt like her parents were kind of terrible. I guess, the short of it is I did not connect with this book because I couldn't connect with the characters.

All that being said, the grieving part, that was so true to life that it actually HURT to read as someone who has lost a close family member. The writing was great, just the story line didn't work for me like I had hoped. I am still looking forward to the next one though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but one little thing.... 28 December 2016

Markus and Lucy?! I don't know why but that bugs me so damn much. How can she refer to him as one of her brothers if she had sex with him?
I did feel like there might be more between him and Lucy connection wise, especially in the first half of the book.
The implied connection between him and Mekena took longer for me to feel. By the end I was sold.
Loved Markus, even when I thought he was a guilty dog. Mekena was frustrating at times but I was rooting for her.
Again, I'm not sure what purpose the Markus and Lucy bit served.
5.0 out of 5 stars Toni Aleo once again did a wonderful job writing a powerful and emotional book about love, life, friendship, and family. 29 December 2016

This time of year may be hectic but it is also joyful. Most people are taking the time to reconnect with family and friends. They are celebrating life and making new goals for the new year. The release of Face-Off At The Alter by Toni Aleo was perfectly timed. I felt like I was reconnecting with my old friends from The Assassins series and The Bullies series.

It all begins with Lucy Sinclair and Benji Paxton's wedding. The wedding has turned into a week long event. It's time for family and friends to reconnect and enjoy one another's company. Markus Reeves is heading home to Nashville from Florida spend time with his adoptive family, the Sinclairs.

Markus Reeves has spent the last couple of years in Florida playing hockey for the Assassins farm team. His life has spun out of control and his dreams are no longer within reach. He always dreamed of playing in the NHL for the Assassins. His game has tanked since his move to Florida. He hates his coach, his teammates, and his life. The only thing he's looking forward to is returning home to Nashville for Lucy's wedding. He's looking forward to spending time with his friends. He also knows it's time to face the music and face the girl he destroyed. The girl that sent his life in a downward spiral.

Lucy's wedding must be his good luck charm. Ellie Adler has come to Jacksonville. He's being brought up on conditional terms. It's his second chance and opportunity to prove his worth as a player and teammate. He's going to do everything in his power to make a place for himself on the Assassins team. He's going to become the man he was supposed to be before his world imploded two years ago. The man he was before he destroyed Mekena Preston.

Mekena Preston has returned to Nashville to photograph Lucy and Benji's wedding. She left Nashville two years ago after Markus and her sister betrayed her. She's not the same girl she once was. Her heart is full of anger and hate. Taking this job means she will have to face Markus Reeves. Although she is not looking forward to seeing him, this time around she is in control. This time around she is going to push back.

Mekena and Markus were both destroyed when he slept with Skylar Preston ( the Bullies series). The betrayal destroyed them both as individuals. Two years later they are both finally going to get closure. They can finally move on in life. They can finally reach their full potential. Fate is once again going to intervene and change both of their destinies. Fate is going to right some wrongs but will come at another high price.

Toni Aleo once again did a wonderful job writing a powerful and emotional book about love, life, friendship, and family. The pure honesty is what makes her books beyond exceptional. Readers have become deeply connected to all her characters and their stories.
