I love the Charlie Fox novels but this is a disappointing collection of short stories. For one, some of these are so short they barely deserve the title of story. For another, they don't really give a flavour of how dense, tense and darkly emotive the novels are.
For me, one of the best things about the books is the complicated and disturbing relationship between Charlie and Sean Meyer, one of the most nerve-jangling pairings in contemporary fiction. The absence of Sean strips these stories of some of their unnerving allure.
I see these are also being sold as stand-alones so it's worth knowing that the collection consists of the following:
A bridge too far
Postcards from another country
Truth and Lies
If you haven't experienced Charlie Fox yet I would go straight for the novels and you should read them in order. Zoe Sharp is a brilliant and underrated writer - but this collection doesn't really do much for either her skills or her heroine's.
