The explanation for that view is as follows:
There isn't a lot of info available as to what (if any) masks come with the UFO itself. The package I received contained four different kinds of masks:
- Make My Day: a hydrating and anti-pollution mask with hyaluronic acid and red algae. The stated purpose is for "skin that looks and feels hydrated, protected and refreshed". The box contains 7 packets and an additional one shows up in the package that contains the actual UFO.
- Youth Junkie: an intensive renewal mask infused with collagen. As per the box, it "[r]educes the appearance of fine lines for younger-looking skin". This one also has things like olive and jojoba oils and shea butter, and the box contains 6 packets.
- Call It a Night: a revitalizing and nourishing mask with ginseng and olive oil. Its purpose is to "[r]evitalize and replenish your skin, leaving it smooth and dreamy-soft". The box contains six packets.
- Matte Maniac: an extra-purifying, charcoal-infused mask that also contains witch hazel (amongst other things). This one "[m]attifies and purifies for clean, healthy-looking skin". The box contains six packets.
The various substances that comprise the masks are all basically clear gels, except for Youth Junkie which is more of a white cream. One important note is that all of them contain added fragrance(s), so if you're someone who isn't fond of that, that is something to keep in mind.
One big plus is that the company is generous when it comes to the masks, both in terms of the amount of masks one gets and the amount of product in each packet; each mask/piece of fabric is thoroughly saturated and there is usually more than enough product left in the packets that can be perhaps be saved and used at a later date, or it could be added at the beginning or end of each treatment to allow even more to be able to sink into the skin.
Another thing to note is that while it is not indicated that Matte Maniac and Young Junkie can be used alone, it is explicitly stated on the boxes for Make My Day and Call It a Night that they can be used without the actual UFO (and I would suspect that the others can be used alone, too). That is something to keep in mind, especially from a money-saving perspective. One would guess that a lot of benefits could be derived from just applying the masks to the skin and letting them sit there and sink in, much like one would do for traditional masks. I can't say that the same kind of benefits could be achieved without the use of the UFO's features, but it stands to reason that the masks would perform well on their own.
As for those benefits, I can say that in 90 seconds, the masks (and the various combinations of lights, temperature variations, and pulses/vibrations that come courtesy of the UFO) leave the skin feeling softer, moisturized, and (for the most part) smoother. The latter is important as I'm someone with very sensitive skin, and I have seen some breakouts after using the masks - they're small and tend to heal quickly, but something (likely the fragrances) does cause my skin to react while simultaneously making it look and feel somewhat better overall.
I also have to note that all of the masks tend to leave a sticky/tacky feeling on the skin, which is something that I really don't enjoy. Given my sensitive skin, I allow the product to sink in for quite awhile, but I don't sleep with the masks on at full strength - eventually, I do rinse my face using first lukewarm and then cool water, because stickiness like that has historically spelled disaster for my skin. This way, I derive a good amount of the benefits, but seem to stave off the worst of the (possible/likely) breakouts, though again, some do still crop up.
Do the masks and/or the UFO totally change the skin? Nope. The benefits are nice (and the experience of using the UFO is fairly relaxing), but they aren't all that significant. (Though I've used this quite a few times at this point, it is possible that more substantive changes occur with longer usage. If I see that, I'll update this review.)
One last plus is that this doesn't take long to charge, and it holds that charge for quite awhile: even though I've used mine many times, there still isn't any indication that the charge is running low.
I do have to say that I really dislike how dependent the UFO is on the app, for many reasons. First, if you want real instructions, you have to get them on said app (or they can be downloaded from the company's website). Secondly, if your phone is a little on the older side, the app won't be compatible with your device. Then, too, I've heard from some people that the app doesn't even work all that well sometimes. (That hasn't happened to me, so it didn't impact this particular review, but I thought it was worth mentioning.) Frankly, it seems really gimmicky to me, especially since the UFO arrives already pre-programmed for two of the masks; with that being the case, I would have really preferred that all of the masks - or even just all of the ones that came with the product - were also pre-programmed in the device, and then the app could be more along the lines of a bonus feature rather than something that is basically mandatory.
So this is a product that has a fair amount of both upsides and downsides, but one of the biggest cons is the price. This is something that I'd heard about and seen on YouTube and I wanted to try it. Had I not gotten the chance to try it for the sake of submitting a review, though, it would've been prohibitively expensive for me. Other reviewers have mentioned the idea that if you're someone who regularly gets facials, then purchasing and using the UFO in lieu of those treatments would eventually save you money. That's probably true, but I do have to say that I'm not sure the benefits of these masks and the UFO are necessarily on par with the results one could get from real facials.
Ultimately, this is a nice, relaxing product that seems to do some good things for the skin. However, in my experience, the downsides are more significant than the benefits; therefore, I can't say that the product's high cost is justified.
Part of the directions is that you have to load the app. I ain't doing that. I have no desire to let Foreo know when I'm washing my face. I also don't want reminders, pop-ups and emails telling me it's time to buy the $9 refills.
And guess what? You don't need the app to work the device! It works just fine without it.
I used it everyday for a week. I saw no difference. I used it on the weekends in the morning and at night after my shower during the work week. Why? Even though the British chick said the directions, that I can't read, say to use it twice a day, it really cannot. The treatment does only take 90 seconds, but it takes too long for the serum to dry and I have to go to work. What I did was do a treatment and then put the rest of the serum on from the packet, and then do it again. I don't know if it is dangerous to do it twice because the directions are too tiny to read. If there are any precautions, I'll never know.
The price of the refills is outrageous. It is $9 a week for a treatment. The device I got had one sample and four boxes of treatments. This included nighttime and daytime treatments. I was hoping for a neck treatment because ever since I saw Sally Field in Spiderman, I have been very conscious of my neck. Sally Field may look great, but her neck really showed her age.
When I was using it around the third time, I didn't put the pad on correctly and it came off. Then I thought, why put on a pad? Then I thought, why only use Foreo's serums? The British chick says the heat and cold make the serums go into the skin. Wouldn't that clog pores?
The good points are that even thought I didn't see results, it did feel good. I like the heat and the cold. The worst part is the price. I understand there is a lot of technology in the device, but going on $300 (the price of a decent phone) is too much.
