Naota is a detached sixth-grader afflicted by the pangs of puberty. He's fooling around with his brother's ex-girlfriend when a crazed girl on a motor scooter runs him over, brains him with a bass guitar, and moves into his house. This pink-haired girl, Haruko—who claims she's an alien—hurls Naota into the middle of a mega-corporation's secret agenda. Oh, and now giant battling robots shoot from his skull. Mix in mind-bending animation and tunes that echo through your cerebellum to top off the trip that will have you falling hard for FLCL.

I saw FLCL a long time ago and remembered hating it, mainly because I was just starting to get into the weird side of anime. But FLCL was just too weird for me at the time. However, years later, I watched it again and now I love it. It's one of those perfect anime series that I just can't get enough of. Everything about it--the story, the characters, the craziness of it all--is perfect. Only a few people will get this series. After all, this isn't for everyone (is ANYTHING for everyone?). One of the best things about this series is that while not much really goes on (at least, a standard amount of things goes on at a steady pace), it makes it look like a LOT is going on, and it makes sense of all this chaos (Well, as much sense as a series about a boy who gets randomly bashed over the head by a Vespa woman with a guitar and then somehow gets a portal to an alternate dimension stuffed into his head that enables him to sprout giant robots out of his forehead would). We follow Naota, whom everyone calls 'Takkun', a 12-year-old boy who seems pissed off all the time, and only gets more agitated when a crazy Vespa woman named Haruhara bashes him upside the head with her guitar. He soon realizes he's got a portal in his head thanks to the beating he received, and now he can summon robots, fly around, and even smack a falling meteorite into space with a normal baseball bat (this actually happens). Despite Naota's attitude or Haruhara's obvious abusive/crazy personality or the other strange quirks that would normally make the other characters hated pieces of animation, ALL of these characters are likeable. It's kind of rare to see an anime where EVERY character is likeable in their own way. The animation is top-notch, the story is excellent (if confusing on the first viewing, seeing as how the surreal humour can throw anyone off), the writing is high quality, and the anime itself has a strange feeling of nostalgia to it (at least, for me it does, reminding me of the good old days of summer and friendship). Delivery was fast and the package came without any faults, along with the DVDs. As usual, I am very pleased with Amazon's service. Overall, ***** out of ***** "Those slow motion scenes are really hard, huh?" "I know, you have to hold your breath the entire time!"
