While FIFA has stagnated on Switch, receiving only minor upgrades every year (namely up-to-date teams, kits, stadiums, soundtrack, commentaries, and tournaments) it is nevertheless a solid game of virtual football, and the sometimes extreme criticisms levelled toward these releases are not entirely fair given how often other very derivative sequels are praised to high heaven for minimal effort (such as the very superfluous Puyo Puyo Tetris 2).

Those who want the full-course meal have the new generation editions at their disposal, while the Switch instalments provide for a worthy handheld alternative that also doubles as a lighter console experience. The price usually comes down to a fairer amount shortly after launch, so it's definitely worth waiting for those on the fence.

I think EA should at least include some new modes (such as the Mii modes akin to what the Wii versions had back in the day) to make up for the lack of feature parity. Nevertheless, I am glad that FIFA continues to see the light of day on Switch, and it remains what is arguably the best handheld football game on the market, warts and all. Particularly recommended for newcomers and those seeking a solid football game that they can take on the go.
