Great story, lots of twists and turns. Action driven and intrigue. The characters were well thought out and developed. I'll read the next in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average romance, decent story 7 July 2015

This book follows an investigative reporter who is approached by a whistle-blower that uncovers a big environmental cover up. The story, a la Erin Brockovich, is predictable but well written. It was slow to develop and only mildly suspenseful, but it still entertained me.

The book failed in the romance department. I didn't feel this couple at all. Kara is a single mom working at the Denver Independent. She's smart and good at her job. She takes care of herself and her son. Despite the fact that she often puts her job before her son, she is a loving mom. Reese is a Colorado senator. He became a politician to make a difference and is very handsome, smart, caring, strong, and can build cabins. His character was as unrealistic as it gets.

Moving on to the relationship aspect, I'm still not quite sure what attracted Reese to Kara during the couple's first encounter. Her behavior was less than attractive. From there, the book barely gives the couple time to get to know each other before they're off on a trip. It gets better past the middle of the book, but I hope you get what I mean when I say - I just wasn't into this couple.

I rate this book 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the investment! 2 February 2017

Pamela Clare is an excellent, talented writer. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of her novels in this series. It is wonderful to read a series about investigative journalists with such well-drawn, complex characters. And stories whose plots are character-driven! I highly recommend her series and this novel, which is a stand-alone, along with each of the rest in the series. I would recommend starting with the first book in the series, as the I-Team work together and their stories are somewhat intertwined. However, I didn't take my own advice and still enjoyed each novel, reading far into the night to finish them.

I read this genre both for pleasure, and to help manage chronic pain symptoms. I've consumed approximately 3-4 novels per week, for 12 years, so I know the field well. Pamela Clare stands among the best in her field. You can trust your investment of time, energy and money in her work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice suspense 24 June 2014

Since this was my first experience with this author, I really wasn't sure what to expect. The blurb on Amazon listed it as an I-Team novel. The I-Team turned out to be the investigative team at a major newspaper. I can't say I've read many stories set in a newspaper atmosphere except the Avery Shaw series which revolves around a small town newspaper.

Starting out, I wasn't sure I would like the story. The sample I downloaded was full of crude sexual conversations which made me fear the book was simply erotica masquerading as suspense, which is totally not up my alley. I had been searching for something interesting to read for a while and decided I was tired of looking and ready to be reading, so I downloaded the book and have it a try. While it did end up having fairly frequent sex scenes and slightly crude sexual language, I wouldn't term it erotica. It did have a very good plot which kept my interest.

Kara is a reporter who will do anything for her story. Reece is actually an honest senator ( remember, this is fiction, and honest politicians can exist in make believe). These two dance around each other for a while with Reece becoming immediately serious and Kara holding herself back in all ways but physically. As the investigation into a cement company polluting the environment takes as turn toward dangerous, Reece tries to conduct his own investigation and ends up causing himself a lot of trouble. In the end, the passion burns very hot, the danger and suspense were very believable, and Kara and Reece end up saving each other and blowing the investigation wide open.

There were a few peripheral characters who were interesting, such as Kara's new age loving mom and her adorable son. Kara also had several friends in the news room who I'm guessing will show up in future novels. While this was a little more sex than I wanted and was certainly not what I would consider a favorite, it was well written and a good solid suspense.
4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars, good story but there was just something missing 10 March 2015

This is actually probably more of a 3.5 stars. Story is about Reece a Senator and Kara a top investigative reporter. She is raising her son, Connor, alone because Connor has a deadbeat dad who wants nothing to do with them. She is focused on her career and Connor and isn't interested in dating. Kara gets drunk at a bar and runs into Reece who she has interviewed before. Her friend ditches her on purpose so Reece takes her home. She hits on him but he declines since she is drunk but later calls to ask her out and they start dating. Meanwhile Kara is investigating a story about illegal dumping of hazardous materials and she starts to get death threats. It was a good story but it didn't grab me and hold my attention. It took me about 4 days to finish the book which is a long time for me. I didn't have any trouble putting in down for the night. The characters were interesting (Although Kara had a TSTL moment). Reece was quiet frankly just too perfect. He had everything going for him. Moral, gorgeous, upright politician with an endless amount of patience and oh yeah he cooks like a gourmet chief and gives foot rubs. So overall, I liked the book but there was just something missing for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay for me..... 4 February 2013

3 1/2 stars

The plot was okay but the suspense/mystery didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. Reece was likeable but a little too perfect for my liking. Kara was okay for the most part, however there was a side of her that didn't sit well with me (view spoiler)[she was always late to pick her son up from daycare and missed school events, yet was able to take time off work and ditch her son to rendevous with Reece, where were her priorities.

It had a couple of hot sex scenes but they were far from the focus of the story.

All in all an okay read.
