Uproariously funny, this razor-sharp book is half a love-letter to fandom, half self-aware satire, and wholly lovable. I haven't read anything quite like this before! --Sophie Gonzales, author of Only Mostly Devastated

Nick has a huge crush on the extraordinary (superhero) known as Shadow Star, and is obsessed with the ongoing fight with his arch nemesis, Pyro Storm. If only Nick could become an extraordinary himself, he might just get Shadow Storm to notice him. There was a lot to like about this, but ultimately it just didn’t work for me. There was plenty of teen humour, snarky comebacks, superhero action, and a lot of depth in Nick’s character. However, the book spends all its time in Nick’s head and we barely get to know Nick’s best friend, Seth, or his ex-boyfriend, Owen. The dealbreaker for me was that Nick is portrayed as so absolutely clueless about so many things that he is ridiculously naive and gullible - he couldn’t see who had a crush on him, couldn’t spot the obvious patterns that would reveal the secret identities of the extraordinaries, and even believed lies about ghosts. I understand the controversy about police brutality given #blacklivesmatter, and maybe that aspect of Nick’s dad backstory should be rewritten. 🎧 I have a love / hate relationship with Michael Lesley. On the one hand, his breeziness enhances a lot of the humorous dialogue; on the other, it can sound like he’s rushing lines or just doesn’t care.

I'm a long time fan of TJ Klune and when I heard he was writing YA Superhero fiction I almost exploded with excitement, so this review is biased as all get out, but with due cause. TJ knows how to make you laugh, he knows how to make you cry and he knows how to keep you reading. There was a lot to love with this book. The main character, Nick Bell, was the most oblivious, loveable, hyper dork you could ever imagine. His friends Gibby, Jazz and Seth are as well fleshed out as Nick, and we can groan along with them as Nick bumbles through life without a clue. I'm not going to go into any detail of the plot, because you don't need that in a review. Let's just say, just when you think you know what's going on, you don't. And the ending, OMG, so good. Very readable, very funny, just loved it.

Nick is quite the teenager - nerdy, fun, gay, and in love with a superhero (just like me at 16). And he writes himself into fan-fiction to live out his dream life. Until it all becomes a bit too real. Great friends and characters surround him, and his relationship with his dad is brilliant, funny and just right.TJ Klune writes some brilliant works, and he's nailed this YA. I wish I'd had a book like this as a closeted teenager 40 years ago. The family you make are the friends (and super-friends) you hold dearest to you, that you'd do anything for. Laugh out loud goodness with heart and suspense.

I loved this book in many different ways. It was funny and the banter and conversations between the characters was great and I laughed out loud many times. TJ klune understands language and is successful in delivering a emotive narrative to the reader. Not only is this a great book but it is also LGBTQ+ positive and had ADHD representation that I appreciated and enjoyed. In conclusion The Extraordinaries was a delightful coming of age story that deals with many different topics which can be heartbreaking, angsty but also exciting and surprises. Highly recommended 10/10.

I'm really glad I went with the audio version for The Extraordinaries, Michael Lesley does such a wonderful performance with all the characters in this story, especially Nicky. I smiled every time he performed the lines...."Nicky, no." "Nicky, yes!"........This book was packed with all of the feels, and was enjoyable from start to finish.
I love Nick - he's so adorably clueless with regards to his bestie Seth. He has a major obsession with the Extraordinaries, in particular Shadow Star, and a fantastic circle of close friends. I enjoyed the way this story played out, I've learnt to expect the unexpected with this author.

First of all, TJ Klune is my favorite author and I’ll literally read anything this man releases in the world. I mean it. I’m not really fond of YA nowadays but yeah, I had to try this one and I’m glad I did.
The story starts with Nick Bell, a normal teenager who is also the most popular fanfic writer in the Extraordinaries fandom. Which is amazing since TJ really did his research about fanfics and even the tags are perfect, god I loved how accurate they were.
Nick has a ‘big crush’ on the Extraordinary called Shadow Star (you can notice this right away just by reading his fic). And after being saved by him Nick decides he needed to be an Extraordinary too in order to be able to be with Shadow Star.
His friends weren’t so happy with that, especially Seth, his best friend who is very much in love with Nick. Gibby and Jazz are his other friends, they are dating and even though they are very different from each other the two girls work really well. Gibby is a ‘baby butch’ she’s amazing and she’ll protect her friends at all costs. Jazz is a cheerleader and even though people might not see this at first she is very smart and she’s sweet but also amazing like Gibby. And we have Owen, who is a bit difficult but he’s around too.
Seth is my favorite, he truly deserves the whole world, precious boy.
Something TJ knows how to do really well is dealing with heavy/complicated subjects in a lighter and special way. He talks about grief and ADHD in a way you can really feel what the characters are feeling too.
This book is incredibly funny, I wasn't expecting less to be honest. I laughed out loud and also almost died from second hand embarrassment. But it’ll also make you suffer and cry with the characters.
All of that being said I can conclude by telling you this: Read the Extraordinaries! You’ll laugh a lot and feel all the ‘feels’ too and since you’re already here, do yourself a favor and go read TJ’s other books as well, you won’t regret it, I’m sure!

I have to start this saying go and read it! I know you will love it so much that you will need the sequel right now, just like me.
This is the story about Nick Bell a tennanger boy that love (and maybe is a little obsessed, well, too much obsessed with) extraordinaries, a group of people with superpowers that save the people of Nova City, and he write fanfics about them, or more specifically, he writes fanfics about Shadow Star, his biggest crush. As Nick would say, “when before became after” and other things happened, Nick set out to make himself extraordinary, with or without Seth Gray’s help, Nick’s best friend and maybe more than that.
I don’t know what to say of this book, I loved it completely. The up and down of emotions had me trapped, that I couldn’t stop reading it until I finished; I cried, I laughed, and I fell in love with every character of this story.
Nick is the most beautiful person in the world. I love his mind, the way he thinks and how he is full of happiness and joy. You have to run behind him because he is a tornado of emotions and thoughts and adventures that will have you saying “Nick, no!” and he will reply “Nick, yes”.
Seth is a precious boy that when you meet him, you will want to hug him and never leave him. I loved everyone, but Seth is my favorite.
Gibby and Jazz, they are perfect and I need to know more about them. I loved how TJ Klune plays with the stereotypes, how he uses them and breaks them through comments and actions that his characters do.
And Nick and his father were the most emotional experience ever, I loved their relationship, the way they love each other and how they support each other, and yes, I cried like a baby in some scenes.
This book has everything, the atmosphere is incredible and even though I already knew how some plots would turn, I really really loved it so much that I need the sequel right now!
Please if you have the chance to read it, do it! You will love it.

Just loved it! Strongly recommend this for LGBT YAs as it has a gay and lesbian coupling in it;
The characters are well drawn out and the writing is funny and sentimental.
Got chocked up quite a few times and laughed out loud many times!
While it is the primary relationship is long drawn out, it does have a lovely satisfactory ending.
The relationship between the protagonist and his father is just heart warmingly beautiful.
Wish I had novels like this when I was growing up. Glad it's out there now!
