Book Description
From the Inside Flap
In Nova City, there are extraordinary people, capable of feats that defy the imagination. Shadow Star protects the city and manipulates darkness, and Pyro Storm is determined to bring the city to it's knees using his power over fire.
And then there's Nick who . . . well, being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?
Instead of fighting crime, Nick must contend with a new year at school, a father who doesn't trust him, and a best friend named Seth, who may or may not be the love of Nick's short, uneventful life.
It should be enough. But after a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City's mightiest hero (and Nick's biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he'll do it with or without Seth's reluctant help.

Uproariously funny, this razor-sharp book is half a love-letter to fandom, half self-aware satire, and wholly lovable. I haven't read anything quite like this before! --Sophie Gonzales, author of Only Mostly Devastated

I love Nick - he's so adorably clueless with regards to his bestie Seth. He has a major obsession with the Extraordinaries, in particular Shadow Star, and a fantastic circle of close friends. I enjoyed the way this story played out, I've learnt to expect the unexpected with this author.

The story starts with Nick Bell, a normal teenager who is also the most popular fanfic writer in the Extraordinaries fandom. Which is amazing since TJ really did his research about fanfics and even the tags are perfect, god I loved how accurate they were.
Nick has a ‘big crush’ on the Extraordinary called Shadow Star (you can notice this right away just by reading his fic). And after being saved by him Nick decides he needed to be an Extraordinary too in order to be able to be with Shadow Star.
His friends weren’t so happy with that, especially Seth, his best friend who is very much in love with Nick. Gibby and Jazz are his other friends, they are dating and even though they are very different from each other the two girls work really well. Gibby is a ‘baby butch’ she’s amazing and she’ll protect her friends at all costs. Jazz is a cheerleader and even though people might not see this at first she is very smart and she’s sweet but also amazing like Gibby. And we have Owen, who is a bit difficult but he’s around too.
Seth is my favorite, he truly deserves the whole world, precious boy.
Something TJ knows how to do really well is dealing with heavy/complicated subjects in a lighter and special way. He talks about grief and ADHD in a way you can really feel what the characters are feeling too.
This book is incredibly funny, I wasn't expecting less to be honest. I laughed out loud and also almost died from second hand embarrassment. But it’ll also make you suffer and cry with the characters.
All of that being said I can conclude by telling you this: Read the Extraordinaries! You’ll laugh a lot and feel all the ‘feels’ too and since you’re already here, do yourself a favor and go read TJ’s other books as well, you won’t regret it, I’m sure!

This is the story about Nick Bell a tennanger boy that love (and maybe is a little obsessed, well, too much obsessed with) extraordinaries, a group of people with superpowers that save the people of Nova City, and he write fanfics about them, or more specifically, he writes fanfics about Shadow Star, his biggest crush. As Nick would say, “when before became after” and other things happened, Nick set out to make himself extraordinary, with or without Seth Gray’s help, Nick’s best friend and maybe more than that.
I don’t know what to say of this book, I loved it completely. The up and down of emotions had me trapped, that I couldn’t stop reading it until I finished; I cried, I laughed, and I fell in love with every character of this story.
Nick is the most beautiful person in the world. I love his mind, the way he thinks and how he is full of happiness and joy. You have to run behind him because he is a tornado of emotions and thoughts and adventures that will have you saying “Nick, no!” and he will reply “Nick, yes”.
Seth is a precious boy that when you meet him, you will want to hug him and never leave him. I loved everyone, but Seth is my favorite.
Gibby and Jazz, they are perfect and I need to know more about them. I loved how TJ Klune plays with the stereotypes, how he uses them and breaks them through comments and actions that his characters do.
And Nick and his father were the most emotional experience ever, I loved their relationship, the way they love each other and how they support each other, and yes, I cried like a baby in some scenes.
This book has everything, the atmosphere is incredible and even though I already knew how some plots would turn, I really really loved it so much that I need the sequel right now!
Please if you have the chance to read it, do it! You will love it.

The characters are well drawn out and the writing is funny and sentimental.
Got chocked up quite a few times and laughed out loud many times!
While it is the primary relationship is long drawn out, it does have a lovely satisfactory ending.
The relationship between the protagonist and his father is just heart warmingly beautiful.
Wish I had novels like this when I was growing up. Glad it's out there now!
