2.0 out of 5 stars Meh, that's the only word 13 October 2015

that comes to mind after reading these stories. First the title is wrong and misleading, it should read hints on evil. Second the stories aren't memorable, they're predictable run of the mill ordinary tales, maybe if the focus was on describing the actual horror instead of the scenery....I think that's where I have the problem with this book because the opportunity to be a bit more descriptive was there yet it wasn't taken. In my opinion, this is a pass.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... is a collection of seven short stories set in Great Britain and Australia 2 January 2015
By Lynda Dickson - Books Direct - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a collection of seven short stories set in Great Britain and Australia. The author sets the scene in a short introduction.

In "Monsters in the Mist", Nate Phillips is a grown man who has been under the thumb of his controlling mother far too long. Nate's childhood fears resurface when the bodies of three young children are found on his work site. Then he finally gets up the courage to do something about his situation after being visited by a ghostly presence in the mist.

In "The Bonding", Sally Meekham buys an old mansion that is thought to be haunted. It turns out she has signed up for much more than she has bargained for.

In "Love Outlasted" Gabby Allman's husband Levi is missing, presumed dead. Twelve months later, Gabby decides to pursue their dream of buying a home in the country. Will Levi ever return to her?

In "Dark Star", Dutton Forrest is a Trekkie who believes in dark stars and aliens. All he wants is evidence to prove their existence to the other members of the Star Trek Foundation. Will he get his wish?

In "Trinity of Terror", Sybilla is a ghost hunter on the trail of Marcus Mason, an evil spirit. But what happens when the hunter becomes the hunted?

In "On the Edge of Darkness", Bella visits the Australian Outback with her boyfriend Dan and encounters some strange phenomena.

In "From the Book of Redemption", Michael is part of the Merman society where it is forbidden to feel and where the Killing of the land dwellers is a regular occurrence. Michael wants to escape this life and be free to be himself. Will he ever find happiness?

These seven stories share the common themes of alienation, loneliness, ghostly presences, and the loss of a parent at an early age. The author very skillfully gives us only as much information as is necessary, forcing us to use our imaginations and come to our own conclusions.

Be warned, this is a grim collection. No happily-ever-afters here.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable stories, intriguing and spooky 8 January 2015

Is anyone surprised my first read for the new year is a horror collection? Since it’s my favorite genre, I can’t say that I am.

Anyway, Evil Imminent proved to be an interesting collection of short horror stories, and if you ask me, a great read to start the new year. The collection starts out with a short introduction where the author explains the appeal of writing and reading horror. Then starts the first story, “Monsters in the Mist”. The story is about Nate, a single man with an unhealthy relationship with his mother. The construction company he works for just unearthed three bodies, and he witnessed the gruesome discovery. What happens next was definitely surprising and scary – but I won’t spoil it for you. Let’s just say it was my favorite part of the collection, and a great start for the book.

The second story, “The Bonding” talks about Sally who bought a large, historical mansion, rumored to be haunted, and finds out for herself what secrets the mansion harbors. “Love Outlasted” is about Gabby, a woman devastated by grief after her husband went missing in action. This story wasn’t that scary, but it definitely qualified as dark fiction. “Dark Star” is about Dutton’s yearning to find his mother, “Trinity of Terror” talks about an overconfident ghost hunter and what could go wrong by being too arrogant, “On the Edge of Darkness” talks about Bella, who disrespects other cultures and may get punished for doing so, and the collection ends with “From the Book of Redemption”, the story of Michael, who seeks redemption but might never receive it.

The stories are all vastly different, yet they match well together. We get psychological terror as well as supernatural horror. My favorite story, as I mentioned, was “Monsters in the Mist”. My least favorite would be “From the Book of Redemption”, since it wasn’t that scary. Overall, all the stories were enjoyable and they make for an intriguing collection. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good anthology 23 December 2014

This is 7 short stories of paranormal and evil. As anthologies go it's not bad. Some of the stories are really short and some a bit longer. Each one is unique in its own way and I read through it in no time. Would say more but don't want to ruin it for anyone. For the price it's a steal and I really enjoyed each story
