When I came across this book I was intrigued to have the chance to read a book which claims to consolidate the history of Europe for the second half of the 20th century. Having previous read other books by Walter Laquer I knew the structure of the book would be detailed yet readable, informative yet not overpowering.
Laquer combines quantitative and qualitative analysis to describe how the economic climate of Europe has developed over the past 50 years, taking into account its relationship with other nations, notably the USA. Two main themes are central to the book - the reaction of Europe to the end of the Second World War and the reaction of Eastern Europe to the development and subsequent collapse of communism.
Probably more suited as a text reference than a general read, I recommend this as an excellent source of information if you want to know more about the economical and political history of Europe in the second half of the 20th century.
