Erica is lonely and obsessed with Faye, the beautiful mother and model who lives near her. She watches her take he kids to school, go to the gym and pretty much everything else everyday. Faye seems to have the perfect life from the outside but she had a terrible mistake and it is threatening to ruin everything for her. Then there are the men - Phillip, Fayes husband and Jonah his best friend. Jonah is creepy and nasty and wants something that he can't have. Phillip loves his wife and kids and will do anything to protect them. When their daughter Tasmin goes missing Faye might be thankful for her stalker - or will she?
This is the case for Erica who is obsessed with Faye who’s life appears to her as being perfect. Faye is a model, has two beautiful children and a handsome husband. What isn’t perfect about that?
Erica on the other hand, is the complete opposite. Overweight, unattractive, single and has no purpose in life. She thinks that Faye has it all, but an indiscretion on Faye’s part shows Erica that she is not so perfect after all.
Throw in an abduction, Fayes husband who isn’t also so perfect and her husbands best friend who is even crazier than Erica with his own obsession of Faye and you would think that you would have the perfect thriller on your hands!
Sadly in this case you don’t in my opinion 😢
At times this book can be quite confusing to follow. Each chapter starts with the name of a character so you would assume that the whole chapter would be on that person but halfway through it changes to another character without warning and I found myself having to go back to try and work out who’s point of view I was now reading from which was quite tiresome.
This is the first book I have read from Amanda after hearing great things about her work. I appreciate the effort that was put into telling the story but for me I couldn’t connect with the characters. It was a shame as it had the potential to be great.
Whilst this book didn’t resonate with me, I still wanted to finish it and I am sure that there will be readers out there that will enjoy it.
Reading an unfavorable review doesn’t effect my decision on reading a book so I do hope that for anyone taking the time to read this that they will still read this book if it appeals to them.
Having said all that, I did like the style of writing and will still read more books from Amanda in the future.
Top international reviews
Written from the point of view of four characters, Faye, Philip, Erica and Jonah in short chapters, this book was a delight to read, and has many unexpected twists. From the pen of Amanda Robson, who wrote 'Guilt' and 'Obsession', 'Envy' remains within the theme of how destructive emotions affect other people's lives in the worst possible way. I expected no less than the highly-charged prose that was evident from Ms. Robson's previous two books, but 'Envy' gave me so much more.
I'm looking forward to her next novel.
Envy by Amanda Robson
Envy was a fun read. It is a twisty psychological thriller about obsession, secrets and of coarse..envy. Lots of envy!
I did moderately enjoy this book but not as much as I could have. I liked the beginning and middle very much but it seemed to run out of steam as it approached the end.
There is no real way to do this review without spoilers. I am all for plot twists but one thing I do not like in my thrillers are characters who behave in a completely different way then they have through the book.
That pertains to Faye's husband. To put it bluntly I could not buy into the ending at all. The idea that this one woman had not one, not two but THREE stalkers seemed highly implausible and I really did not buy Hubs as a deranged killer. His voice toward the end started to sound exactly like the Voice of Jordan, his stalker friend an d as a result I could not really take the ending as seriously as I'd have liked.
I would still recommend it. It is easy to read, fun and twisty and surprisingly touching in some respects. I adored the characters of Rose an d Mouse. I wish the book had not gone all topsy turvy with turning Hubs in to a nutter but until that happened, I'd have likely given this a four because it was a fun read.
If you can suspend your disbelief and just have fun with i t, chances are you will like Envy.
