Therein lies Lisa’s writing skill, it invites you to use your imagination for a while and enjoy the characters and story as it is set in that world.
The synopsis is in the description on Amazon so you don’t need me to describe it again.
I especially enjoyed the main character. She’s mature, level headed, experienced and self sufficient.
An excellent read all round and I’ll be looking forward to her next instalment in the series.
While Shearin's SPI books take place in a recognizable New York City, the residents are...alien, even for New York. The Washington, DC of Aurora Donati is very much the hotbed of politics and intrigue that you see in the news and most of the people are ordinary. One of the exceptions is Rory Donati, who uses her psychometric skills to help the FBI solve crimes which require more than the techniques generally available to them. This provides an interesting twist to the usual crime procedural, as Rory "senses" thoughts and emotions from people and objects who have been in proximity to the criminal, giving her an edge in figuring out who they are and what they will do next.
One of my favorite things about Shearin's books are her characters, and this series is no exception. Rory herself is an interesting and complex individual who is supported by a delightful group of friends, relatives, and associates. Her best friend, Special Agent Berta Pike, is everything that a fictional best friend should be, and her grandfather is a wonderful combination of old world Italian grandfather and modern consulting detective. And then there is Gerald, Ambrose Donati's major domo, who had a small role in this book, but would be wonderful to see more of in the future. The man makes killer cinnamon rolls, what more could you want?
I look forward to the next installment!
