Why did they ruin such a good book with pointless changes in this edition?

I used the old edition of this book as an English teacher for years. It has an explanation of the grammar on the left and exercises for the student to fill in on the right, with answers at the back.
It is one of the old trusty books you can always keep in your teaching bag for emergency use, as it covered all grammatical issues and explained everything so clearly. I frequently advised students to buy it, either to study with me or, more often, for independent study, as it works absolutely great for students to teach themselves grammar in a systematic way while focusing on speaking skills in lessons.
This new edition has been completely ruined by someone who clearly has literally no experience either as a teacher or as a student of English as a foreign language.
It is printed on that shiny paper that weighs half a ton and that you cannot write on properly in pencil. When you try to rub something out it turns into a complete mess. Despite being a larger book than the old one, the pages feel far more cramped and there is less space to squeeze the answers in than the old one had.
The grammar explanations are somehow less clear than they were in the old edition, even though I cannot work out what they have changed, other than to add in random smears of light blue here and there so that it isn't just a black and white book. Adding colour printing makes it more expensive, for no useful reason at all.
if you can find an old edition of this book, jump at it, that one got 5 stars.

Ho voluto caricare delle foto per dimostrare che alcune recensioni bisogna farle con un pò di obiettività: le pagine NON sono lucide, come qualcuno ha scritto. A me personalmente il metodo utilizzato piace ed è a mio parere quello che "impronta" di più; che molti studenti non siano abituati è un altro discorso. Le unità si sviluppano su due pagine: a sinistra la teoria, a destra la pratica. Lo consiglio e probabilmente acquisterò il testo Advanced.

According to many forums this books are highly recomended because they are very complete and you can find whatever kind of aditional information in the end of this book.

I'm right now learning english in an academy too and my teacher recommended to me this book's collection because it is the best way to learn english by your own from your house.

If you want the complete collection you must get:
-Essential Grammar in Use. Although my english is a bit better than this level, it is good to have got it to practise from zero.
-Advanced Grammar in Use. Amazing

It is always the same method and it works. First they explain you grammar and in the next page you have a lot of exercices to complete. To correct it just go in the end of this book and find the solution.

ケンブリッジ大学の出版で出ている英文法書。初版は1985年らしいのでもう30年以上売れ続けていることになる。
私は中学の頃はまだまだ英語に付いていけていたのだが、高校に入りその量に圧倒。結果挫折。入試でもセンターでも英語が足を引っ張った。
で、大学生になると否が応でも英語を見る機会が多くなる。英語の論文が必要になったので読んでみたのだが…。むしろ高校の頃より退化しているような。しかも社会に出ればTOEICとかいうもので、英語で力が判断されてしまうという。これはヤバいと思い、本書を購入した。
サンプルを見てもらえば分かるのだが、そんなにビッシリ英語が書かれていているわけではない。むしろイラストを使って状況を描写することが多々あり、理論一辺倒ではないことがよく分かる。
ところで、この本には「in Use」と付いている。つまり、「使える」文法を教えるよ、という訳だ。日本語の英文法書で言えば、「Forest」よりは「一億人の英文法」のほうに近い。英語は使ってなんぼ。頭に入れても実践できないのではただの木偶の坊になってしまう。
網羅性とわかり易さ、それに実用性を兼ね備えている点では、日本の文法書で並ぶものはなかなかない。例えば、英語でよく話題に上がる「現在完了形」は、このようにイコールで結べる、と示してある。
「He has lost his key. = He lost it recently, and he still doesn't have it.」
類似の表現を使うことで、回りくどい説明なく、どういう状況なのかがすんなり頭に入ってくる。これがこの本の凄いところ。最初こそ英語の量に圧倒されるが、親切さで言えば、むしろ今まで使ったどの文法書よりも上だ。それでいてお堅い文章などない。このバランスが非常によく保たれていると思う。

と、べた褒めばかりもアレなので、気になった点を少し。
右ページにExerciseという練習問題があるが、中級レベルにしては少し易しいような気がする。基本的にはその問題の1つめの表現を言い換えれば良いものが多いので、答えは簡単に作れてしまう。それが反復練習になって良いという面もあるのだが。
それと、意外にも単語を並び替えて文にする問題がない。日本ではメジャーだが、向こうではマイナーなのか。それとも「単語がぐちゃぐちゃになってることなんて実生活でないでしょ」ということなのか。

とにかく驚いた。ペーパーバックなので表紙が傷つきやすいのは難点だが、中身はそれを遥かに超えるレベルを持っている。中学2年くらいまでの実力があれば、すぐに読み進めることができるはずだ。

I am an EFL teacher with 25 years experience and was recently asked to to teach English to a young French student here in France. As I am currently on holiday and I didn't have any teaching materials with me I immediately ordered a used copy of English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy. I already have two other older editions at home in the UK. It is an excellent and very accessible study reference with answer key for both teachers and students. No self respecting English language teacher should be without a copy. With the exception of Practical English Usage by Michael Swann , English Grammar in Use is the definitive self study grammar book in my humble opinion. It arrived much quicker than I had anticipated. It was triple wrapped and in pristine condition. It looked like new. Congratulations and thank you Shine wood!!
