I have waited about a year to write this review, because I wanted to see if this program really worked for me. I am a 55-year-old man who has been overweight most of his life. I started with this book, and went from there into one of Julie's conference call support programs. It has been a struggle at times, but I have lost about 30 pounds and am still losing about a pound a week. I used to binge on cookies and chips a few times a week, but it's been about 10 months since I did that. I am sitting here at 1:30 p.m., having had only a light breakfast, and for the first time in my life not dying to run out and stuff my face at noon every day. I guess I'll get lunch at some point today, but I don't worry that I'm going to stuff my face with a burger and fries.
I've tried innumerable weight loss programs over the years, and read dozens of books on the subject, but Julie's program is the first I've found that addressed the core problem: that I was binging to ease the pain of decades-old resentments and emotional damage. To some, that will sound too touchy-feely and like I'm indulging in feelings of victimization, but it's not that at all. With Julie's help, I have for the first time identified the problems so I can start to let them all go, forgive and forget, get on with my life, and get my body and emotions healthy again. Julie is the only person I've encountered who looks at weight problems from every angle, and whose approach is entirely rational and scientific -- and sympathetic, too.
Not everything she's suggested resonates with me, but I've been able to "pick and choose" the parts of her program that address my needs. Much of it seemed extreme at first, but now it seems like the norm. Knock on wood, but after a year -- and now feeling probably better about myself and my future than I ever have -- I think I might be to the point where food will never again be a daily struggle for me.
I STRONGLY recommend this book to anyone who has struggled for years with a weight problem. It's a different approach and, in my experience, it works. Diet programs do not.
