Emerging With Wings: A True Story of Lies, Pain, And The LOVE that Heals

Danielle Bernock dares to acknowledge, and share with honesty, disturbing aspects of her earlier life. As an adult, she grows to courageously challenge long held beliefs - to see her life through the eyes of the One who pursued her until He finally got her attention.

Much of Danielle's memoir is written in an unusual 'raw' style. She's admits what she doesn't remember; also that her views have changed... and will change as she grows. She liberally shares her journal entries with little editing, often not following normal writing conventions. This adds to the authenticity and depth of much of her story.

A goal of memoir, I believe, is to enable readers to reflect on their own life. For me, Danielle achieves this remarkably. “Emerging With Wings” stirred and stirs many emotions; some I'm still processing. At times I laughed and cried; sometimes both when reading the same words! Her frequent references to influential songs, movies and writing cemented my connection to her story – and to my own. I played many of these songs the first night I began reading “Emerging with Wings”. One I've played almost, if not, daily over the few weeks since. I found another new favourite in her playlist yesterday. One recommended book challenges some of my own long held beliefs.

Danielle's writing and recommended resources continue to stir and challenge me. While planning to quickly review, I couldn't help but reread many parts. It was hard to put down. There are so many layers, which I could read again and again. And so many resources still to check out!

5.0 out of 5 stars But Danielle's quirky way of seeing her own pain and the humor and the humor and joy she brings to bear on it through her healin 21 April 2016

If it weren't for the redemptive grace of perspective, some of this book would have been too hard for me to read. When my past pain encounters another person's pain, my empathy for them is almost too much to bear. But Danielle's quirky way of seeing her own pain and the humor and the humor and joy she brings to bear on it through her healing make this a sweet, thought-provoking book.

To me, the most helpful insight was her view of the devil as "JAB!" My husband and I read a prayer aloud together every morning in which we put on the armor of God from the book of Ephesians chapter 6. When we get to "We hold up the shield of faith that extinguishes all the flaming arrows of the evil one," I physically hold my unseen shield across my chest to protect my heart. Those "flaming arrows," also translated "fiery darts," are real and they really hurt. Danielle's book helped raise my consciousness to instantly recognize them as "JAB!" that is, LIES!

One night I realized they are arrows of condemnation and I shoot most of them into my own heart! I realized I need to forgive myself not just for major sins but for all the things I blame and beat myself up over--dozens of times a day! I spent a very productive 90 minutes identifying them and saying aloud (so the enemy could hear!) "I forgive myself for not receiving compliments from others," I forgive myself for calling myself names," "I forgive myself-- (get this one!) "--for not forgiving myself for (each one of those things)!"

I realized that in accusing myself of anything, I am coming into agreement with Satan, who is the "accuser of Christians." I am doing his job for him, attacking myself. And in the process I am becoming more and more like "my father, the devil," instead of "my true Father, the One who loves, saves, protects, and provides for me." There is NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!

This was so freeing! I just had a birthday and for once when I read greeting cards from my husband and daughters I actually believed the things written in them applied to me! Yes, I am sweet and thoughtful! Yes, I am caring! Yes, I do make others happy!

No more JAB! Thank you for this book, Danielle!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous read about finding's God's redemptive grace, and allowing self-forgiveness 7 March 2017

This is a well-written book that covers a detailed search by the author to find God and forgiveness over deep-rooted emotional pain originating in childhood. Over the years, Danielle documents her path, her search, and the grace of God in comforting her and resourcing her with a beautiful marriage and family, even though her self-acceptance through the eyes of God took years to find. Her powerful story shows it is OK to be different, it is OK to make mistakes, and it is OK to define God's type of happiness without the approval of others. Sometimes institutions, religious or otherwise, can make you feel guilty of being different. Danielle's story is one that ends with a freedom and peace that God intends without guilt that satan tries to impose, regardless of earthly source. Her ability to write and capture thoughts descriptively shows throughout the book. This is a book that you can read and draw your own personal parallels whenever you feel like you are falling short of God's will. It is a must read if you are interested in a walk with God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emerging with Wings - A Story of Saving Grace 14 March 2017

This is an engaging, emotional story of a life redeemed through faith, forgiveness and perseverance. The author takes her readers on a journey illustrating a life that no one would wish on another. Readers are rewarded by a thoughtful ending and a sense of hope - the conquering force. The format of the book is eclectic, offering the story in prose and poetry, This is not a book just for the faithful, but a book that can touch anyone who struggles with what seem to be overwhelming odds. Certainly the book is grounded in faith but it is accessible to all readers who might not initially find answers in faith. When all seems hopeless, the author finds redemption and revival. This pathway to a second chance is available to all. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Danielle describes The Pursuers' relentless love (Father God's heart) in setting her free I found ... 14 April 2015

Journeys...."It's not the destination that is important," a wise friend once shared with me, "it's the journey." Danielle's journey described in her book, "Emerging with Wings" took me on a healing journey. Faith and grace took wings in her life, as she shared the pain the lies wove into her life through the JAB (jealous, angry bully), I related all to well. "Authorities have the power (to form your identity and worth), "You deserve excessive punishment", "You have no power or voice", "Perfection required", "Pastor's don't have time for you".... and the list went on. As Danielle describes The Pursuers' relentless love (Father God's heart) in setting her free I found much encouragement to continue to know and seek that same freedom in my own heart. I am grateful for her beautiful vulnerability; for without it a story is lifeless. Danielle's has much life and love in it.

Danielle takes you on a journey of self discovery, through the hills and valleys of her life. "The Pursuer" (God) was chasing after her the entire time.

I found so many parallels to my own journey while reading about her's. Thank you, Danielle for sharing your story with us.

My favorite quote from the book - What “they” say you cannot overcome I find you can with the help of The Pursuer.
