Dan Abnett writes good books, filled with characters you want to care about. This is such a book..
Lex Falk is a journalist, burnt out but unable to give up the adrenaline rush of being a war correspondent. He's just landed on planet Eighty Six, and is digging to find the truth about the "confict" that's happening. The Military want to hide the truth, so Lex gets himself "Chipped" into the brain of a Special Forces soldier to find out what's happening on the front line. (think Avatar in regard to the chipping, he's along for the ride in another body, while in a sensory deprivation tank).
The soldier, Nestor Bloom, along with his squad and several others get ambushed by "rebels" being lead by Bloc soldiers disguised as civilians. He gets shot in the face, and virtually dies. Only Lex is in there too, and he somehow is keeping the body not only moving, but alive as well. Leading the survivors, Lex/Nestor uses his journalistic smarts to escape from behind enemy lines, and discovers the secret both the Settlement Office Military Directorate and the Bloc are seeking to find for themselves. The story, thanks to Lex being "chipped" into Nestor, gets out just as all the survivors are about to be murdered, first by Bloc soldiers, and then by a SOMD black ops group.
