First of all, the box that this is packaged in (and I mean the product box, not the shipping box) is one of the most confounding, confusing, Houdini-like bits of packaging that I have ever confronted. Just opening it became a personal challenge to me, a matter of honor. Some box designer tossed down the gauntlet and darn it, I was going to pick it up. I actually pretty much ruined the top of the box trying to saw it open with a sharp pair of scissors. The box won round one. I kid you not when I say I studied the box for a half an hour (no joke!) before I figure out its magic secret. Hit, start at the bottom of the box and keep telling yourself, tri-fold, tri-fold, tri-fold. Was this bit of design nonsense really necessary? I can picture some people just tossing the box into the front yard and kicking it down the street to open it. I was nearly one of them. How about printing two simple words somewhere on the box: "Open here."
OK, so now I have the box opened (and there are a bunch of other little challenges along the way, like a multi-part unfolding to get the manual out. And the manual itself is written in very soothing very pale blue ink, in a relatively tiny font, which is to say: if you're over 20 years old, you won't be able to read it. Why has black ink suddenly gone out of style? I've been in publishing for 40 years and I can tell you this (helpful if you own a blog or a website too): black fonts work. We're been testing it and proving it in publishing for decades.
OK so now I have the actual product, the mister, out of the box. And I have a bottle of water next to me, I'm ready to essentially soothe all of my troubles and frustrations away (trust me, by the point, I needed some soothing). But where does the water go? The "manual" (I use the term so loosely, every so loosely) simply says "Remove the outer cover from the base." Yes? How? Is there a handle? A screw? Something to turn? I'm a guy, help me out here. Crickets (which, by the way, would be a good sound effect to add). Again I stared. Twist it? You know that as a guy my initial and almost irresistible urge is to pry the thing apart with a screwdriver. I resisted. I tried twisting the globe. Nada. Then, on a whim, I slipped a fingernail under the rim between the white plastic and the robin's egg blue globe and I pried a bit (you'll thank me for that tip) and, voila! It gave a bit. So I tugged (gently, I was still reservring my option kick it down the street if it didn't work) and it came apart!
From that point it was simple. Almost. Let me give you a tip if you are buying this (again, you will thank me): plug it in BEFORE you fill it with water. (Enough said on that point.) The plug fits well IF you push it in there and make sure it clicks. You'll know. Of course, I filled mine with water before plugging it in (guy, remember?) and so I had to kind of juggle it over my head without spilling it after I re-inserted the inner core to the outer covering and then plug it in. Oy. From this point on, I just played with the remove to see what it did. Surprisingly, the instructions are pretty good on how to operate the remove. But it has icons, so for example, if you want music, you press the musical note. Piece of cake.
I pressed the light icon and lo and behold, a pretty pink light came on, then turned blue, then white....I could feel my bliss already approaching. Green, ahhh. Nature. Now let's try the music (we'll get to the mist, but I'm a writer, I needed to work up to the dramatic conclusion slowly). First some New Age electric piano. OK, but not me. Next some other type of electro music. Nah. Next, the sound of ocean waves! Yes! Yes! Yes! And I live in a beach town, and these wave sounds are *real* to be sure! Oh my! Colors and waves, I'm so there. Let's try the steam thing. Suddenly, a plume of scented (very very mildly scented, I'll add more drops next time) mist came up like a mini volcano, the steam gently wafting upwards as the waves crashed sweetly below. My new friend has arrived. It's pretty, it changes color, it makes nice ocean sounds--and it smells nice. I'm hooked.
No kidding, as definitively un-New Age as I am (I'm an aging hippie, we resent any new ages coming along), this is the most relaxing little thing you can imagine. I write about 15 hours a day (writing is nothing if not tedious at times) and I'm continually annoyed by the sounds of suburbia (lawnmowers, those annoying kids laughing and having fun, dogs who have nothing better to do than bark happily when their girl comes home) and this wave sound is wonderful. I am honestly embarrassed to say how peaceful and enjoyable this big blue egg on my desk has become.
If I were to ever again to try to charm a woman (once again, I'm a guy, remember?), I would first start with my love of cats, then move on to my cooking skills, talk about my love of gardens and travel...but I would come in for the kill with this little ball of bliss. That is, if I was willing to share its magic. And that I will have to ponder. I'm keeping the box, by the way: if this thing soothes me out too much, I'll regain my inner frustration by trying to remember how to open it--because (here's my big criticism): you have to open it to get to the on/off switch! Why is there no power on/off button on the remote? Also, I don't think the switch works very well because it seems to turn things on but not off. I'm considering deducting a star for that, we'll see.
By the way, in all seriousness, I really do believe in the healing power of scents. I have had memories flash back to me from certain scents that nothing else has ever conjured nearly as well. Scent is one of the most powerful of the senses.
But for now, ahhhh....peace.
I did forget to update my initial review, but the sellers sent me a replacement diffuser. The replacement works as described. I do appreciate their willingness to replace it without additional costs. So I'll upgrade my review from a 2 star to a 4 star.
The actual diffuser is beautiful & functions wonderfully; however, I would like to be able to easily use the music settings (remote needed) as white noise for my baby while sleeping - truly the reason I chose this specific diffuser.
