Julia and Horst Drosten write historical novels together under the pseudonym Julia Drosten. In their spare time, Julia loves to do yoga, and Horst runs regularly. An amazing story

This is a fascinating, poignant, and gripping tale set during the British colonial invasion of Sri Lanka. It would be a beautiful story if not for the forthright depiction of psychopathic vindictiveness deployed by some of the British army units, apparently with approval of the colonial governors of the time. But in amongst the sporadic mayhem, displacement, exploitation, and suffering borne by the natives there is a satisfying love story and a small host of credible characters fleshing out the plot.
One of the main characters is Siddhi the pachyderm who doesn't say much because she is one of the 'strong silent' types who helps carry the plot through her actions rather than words, so to speak. The writing style flows easily and well while the pace is brisk yet there is enough detail to explain the context so the story is interesting on several levels.
Well worth reading!

Reading Authors Notes this book was written mostly on true facts that did occur with the incident of one event. Most historical novels are not written as close to the facts. Places that has changed was noted and why. I perfer no graphic violence, but in this case, this type of violence did occur and was necessary to to tell the story.

I was fascinated by this book. It covered many aspects of life including culture, family life, love, loss, sexuality, insight into the love and training of an elephant and the story was intricately written around a country which was invaded and ruled mercilessly by the Britons early in the 19th century. The Elephant Keeper's Daughter was beyond expectation and highly recommended reading. Although fictional it was based on events that actually happened.

The cruelty of colonisation has not been documented for all to read in the past. This is fiction based on facts. The colonisation of Victoria, Australia, has similar massacres documented. Victoria, Tasmania and Sri Lanka seem to have suffered in similar ways.
It was a great read.

Such a brutal story about the English taking over Sri Lanka in the 1800's & the cruelty they inflicted on the natives.

A wonderful insight into another culture. The value of women in ancient times is portrayed well but the value of this story in what can be achieved by one determined young woman. This book has it all, loved it.
Having visited this area in Sri Lanka it had a personal interest for me.
