In my opinion, this is Di Meola’s best album. It was recorded in 1977 when Al was 22. DiMeola was already one of the best jazz guitarists in the world. He was phenomenal on both acoustic and electric guitar.
Al recruited some great jazz-fusion players for Elegant Gypsy, his second solo album. They included Lenny White (Return to Forever), Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra), Mingo Lewis (Santana), Anthony Jackson, and Steve Gadd. Gadd was a top session player who played on records by Chick Corea, Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Steely Dan. Jackson has played on records by the O’Jays, Buddy Rich, Donald Fagen, and Pat Metheny. These were some of the best musicians around at that time.
Elegant Gypsy is a guitar driven album. Most of the songs feature fast tempos and have plenty of solos. DiMeola could play a ridiculous number of notes per second but his playing here is also melodic and tasteful. Flight Over Rio is my favorite track. It was written by Mingo Lewis and features Hammer, Gadd, and Jackson. Hammer and Di Meola trade brilliant solos. Elegant Gypsy is one of the best jazz-fusion records of the 1970s. It even reached #58 on the Billboard pop charts.
