From the Back Cover
Jonathan Hemlock lives in a renovated Gothic church on Long Island. He is an art professor, a mountain climber, and a mercenary, performing assassinations (i.e., sanctions) for money to augment his black-market art collection. Now Hemlock is being tricked into a hazardous assignment that involves an attempt to scale one of the most treacherous mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps, the Eiger.
In a breathtakingly suspenseful story that is part thriller and part satire, the author traces Hemlock's spine-tingling adventures, introducing a cast of intriguing characters--villains, traitors, beautiful women--into the highly charged atmosphere of danger. The accumulating threads of suspicion, accusation, and evidence gradually knit themselves into a bizarre and death-defying climax in this exciting, entertaining novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the last absorbing page. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

I read this book for the mountaineering finally and it was okay but I have read better mountaineering adventures.

Not a recommended read. I did enjoy “The Main” but this was a silly attempt at a James Bond novel.

Good holiday-in-the-sun material and an interesting insight into mountain climbing. A bit dated and I saw the twist coming.

Slick and engrossing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2015Verified Purchase
This half homage, half pastiche of Bond-style thrillers makes for an engaging day's read. Trevanian writes with a sharp wit and at breakneck speed, though the denouement feels slightly rushed and falls just short of total satisfaction. The character of Hemlock is engaging despite his aloofness and anti-social demeanour, relying on dry, razor wit and deprecation of his foes to provide much of the novel's entertainment value. Fans of Clint Eastwood's movie adaptation will find much to enjoy in the expanded characterisation of the source text, and the portrayal of women, while still much on genre par for the period, is certainly far less misogynistic than the hurriedly distilled sex dolls seen on screen. Likewise the treatment of homosexual characters suffers less from the outright phobia that plagues Eastwood's adaptation, though be warned that they are still present mainly as points for ridicule.

Master of the written word. The world is a bit sadder without his books to look forward to tucking up in bed with.

Did not enjoy as much as Shibumi, it was one of a kind I suppose. Interesting characters but a little outdated.

I really enjoyed this novel
Reviewed in Canada on 26 February 2018Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this novel. It was suspensful and kept
on guessing all through the story. I found myself reading
later than usual just to find out what was happening on the
next page.
