The late poet laureate, Sir John Betjeman, said that Edinburgh was the most beautiful city in Europe. Like some other great cities it is set on seven hills. But only one of these, Rome, rivals Edinburgh in matching the beauty of its setting with the stateliness of its buildings. A romantic landscape of sea and hills, broad vistas and hidden corners is embellished by a style of architecture combining stern classicism with antiquarian whimsy.

fantastic informative and insightful

Had it all: great facts taking you on a journey way back to the dawn of time and how the Rocky landscape was formed by volcanos right through the turbulence of much colourful and at times a violent history of the city and told like a fantasy novel amid much intricate of kings and infamous local characters

A good general history

A good starter if you want a history of the 1000 years of Edinburgh. If you have any depth in a particular period you may be disappointed. It does fill a gap and you will struggle to find another up-to-date general history of the city.

This book was recommended to Mr Random so I purchased it for him. He said that it was fairly readable up to a point, but the prose became a little dry at times. The lack of maps was also a huge issue.
