Product Description

When Princess Lorelei of Leithe overhears her fiancé’s plot to murder her on the way to their wedding, she does the only smart thing: she runs.

Into the Edgelands, the savage, woodland home of the legendary U’lfer, a race of fierce wolves who walk as men, she knows she is as good as dead, but she would rather be torn apart by werewolves than die by Trystay’s hand.

A young U’lfer warrior named Finn catches her scent on the wind and finds himself possessed by an unnatural desire to shield and protect her from that which hunts her. From the moment he first sees her, Finn knows she is his. He feels her heartbeat, knows her soul, and he will do anything, even suffer exile from the Edgelands to be with her.

But there is more to Lorelei than meets the eye. She is like Finn; there is U’lfer blood in her veins, a beast beneath her skin she never knew was there. The answers she seeks lie south, in the frozen tundra of Rimian, where a village of people just like her have been waiting for Lorelei to come and save them since before she was even born.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mad for Finn ;) 2 November 2014

Fantasy isn't my usual cup of tea but, having read other work by this author, I was intrigued enough to pick up a copy of Edgelanders. And man, did it knock my socks off! Jennifer Melzer is almost Tolkien-esque in her ability to build a word completely different than our own, and yet still make it feel utterly real. I was with Lorelei and her companions for every step of their journey.

The very best part though, for me, was the great characters. I love that no one is simple. Each character is complex and nuanced, and I would often go from loving them to wanting to smack them and back. This made them real to me in a way not many writers manage. That said, I have a special fondness for Finn. Dear, dear Finn. He has such a brave, wonderful heart that I couldn't help but love him almost from the minute he loped onto the page.

Thank goodness the second book is out already, because patience is not one of my strong suits!

An excellent fantasy that will take you on a roller coaster ride!
I really did enjoy this book, the characters, the plot, and the world building. I feel like I'd like to go and explore the world Melzer has created in this book!
Yes, I will agree with some of the reviews that at times the characters are much too stuck in their heads. At times the ratio of exposition and action leans more to the side of rumination, and I sadly found myself skimming through those parts. Just a little less "getting stuck" in a characters thoughts and the story would flow that much better.
Can't wait to start the second book!
2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas defeated by lack of a skilled editor 24 November 2016

This book is in desperate need of an editor. 120 pages into the book we're still talking about the implications about the first dramatic scene. The impending doom is delayed by every pair of characters hashing out how they feel about the event. The world is interesting and there seems to be some good ideas here, but the author bogs us down with character details we don't have nearly enough investment to care about! I'm patient, and the narrator of the audio book wss good enough to make me even more so, but this has turned into a slog and I just can't continue.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Adventure 7 October 2014

The story is an interesting fantasy romance and coming of age tale. There is a fair amount of interspection that makes the story slow; but, it does create the background for strong character development and abundant dialogue. The heroine is Princess Lorelei of Leithe who escapes Into the Edgelands, the savage, woodland home of the legendary U’lfer--werewolves. Yet, the real danger to our heroine are outside forces and traditions she is not aware of that will force her hand.

The werewolf element is not like most "wolf romances" and I found that very refreshing.

I think the cover art is cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful imagery, detailed mythology, and intense themes 22 July 2014

In “Edgelanders” by Jennifer Melzer, Lorelei is thrust out of her sheltered palace life by an arranged marriage that quickly turns into a run for her life. When she crosses the border into the Edgelands, her only thought is to escape the hounds out for her blood, but what she finds is a deep connection to the werewolf Edgelanders, their stag god, and their future. For one thing, her heart is bound by magic to Mad Finn the Reckless, a werewolf who lives up to his nickname, and whom the prophesies describe as her mate.

As a princess, Lorelei never expected marriage to be a choice, but she held on to the thin hope that love would blossom later. Now her expectations are being turned inside out as she discovers a magic bond between her soul and another. How much of love is really a choice when your hearts beat as one? If Lorelei wants to give in to love, she must find the strength to trust again after betrayal has made her heart skittish.

The betrayals started before Lorelei was even born, and now that the lies are beginning to unravel, she finds herself launched on a quest of self-discovery that will determine not only her own fate, but the fate of the mate she never asked for – oh, and let's not forget the fate of the world.

With intense themes of consent and trust, detailed mythologies, and powerful imagery,“Edgelanders” by Jennifer Melzer is a gorgeous blend of epic fantasy and romance in what promises to be a riveting, heart-pumping series.
