Earthly Joys: A gripping historical romance from the No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Other Boleyn Girl Kindle Edition
|New from||Used from|
Digital, Unabridged, WAV
Another sweeping novel from the No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author…
A traveller in a time of discovery, the greatest gardening pioneer of his day, yet a man of humble birth: John Tradescant’s story is a mirror to the extraordinary age in which he lives.
As gardener and confidante to Sir Robert Cecil, Tradescant is well placed to observe the social and political changes that are about to sweep through the kingdom. While his master conjures intrigues at Court, Tradescant designs for him the magnificent garden at Hatfield, scouring the known world for ever more wonderful plants: new varieties of fruit and flower, the first horse chestnuts to be cultivated in England, even larches from Russia.
Moving to the household of the flamboyant Duke of Buckingham, Tradescant witnesses at first hand the growing division between Parliament and the people; and the most loyal of servants must find a way to become an independent squire.

As an historian I was familiar with the period, but not with John Tradescant the Elder. The development of his character truly brought him to life, and I could easily relate to him, being myself a keen gardener.
I enjoyed this book both as an examination of the period in which it is set, and as a thoroughly entertaining story. I enjoyed it so much that the further through I got, the more often I would set it on one side in order to extend the pleasure. Often, encouraged by the story, I would go into the garden and focus upon a task with all the enthusiasm of John Tradescant.
I heartily recommend this book.
The historical accuracy and details are woven into a delightful plot-line. I was so inspired by the book and its sequel "Virgin Earth" that I bought Tradescantia plants for my garden.
