Product Description

Eric Goulden is also known as Wreckless Eric. In 1977 he began his recording career on the legendary Stiff Records label alongside Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and The Damned with his enduring hit single "Whole Wide World." Eventually he sidestepped the mechanics of stardom to become one of Britain’s biggest underground household names, much loved and often misunderstood.
In A Dysfunctional Success he writes with an acute eye for detail about growing up in the 60s and 70s in suburban South East England, discovering music and girls, life as an art student in the frozen northeastern town of Hull. This is an honest coming of age story from both sides of instant pop success: bands, squalid flats, menial jobs, making records, the rise to the point of fame and falling off into poverty and alcoholism in Thatcher's Britain, where Goulden ultimately survived the 1980’s to achieve his own kind of success.
Neil Gaiman says of the book: "I think I was hoping for insight into the early Stiff Records days, which I didn't get. What I got was much better, and a great deal more interesting: a shambling, acutely observed, very funny-sad-true-sharp autobiography by someone who thought that music ought to be fun, and was sometimes even sober.”

LOL, snort through your nose funny. I crack up often reading it in bed, much to the chagrin of my husband. Can't wait to read it on the subway. I'm sure to clear the car yucking it up as I read. Goulden's wry sense of humor is a winner and his knack for telling it like it is, especially his dry quips about his family and school.

I'm not an unbiased reviewer. I've been a fan of Wreckless Eric for almost almost as long as he's been Wreckless Eric, and I've gotten to know him a bit in recent years. With that caveat, I thoroughly recommend "A Dysfunctional Success." I was going to modify that sentence with something like "to anyone interested in rock & roll" but the fact is that Eric has a compelling story to tell -- interest in rock & roll is entirely optional.

Eric achieved early success with his song "Whole Wide World" and, like many others in similar positions, he fell victim to that success. He drank too much, his record label lost interest in him, and he found himself working a succession of odd jobs. In broad strokes, it's too common a story. Unlike some others, though, Eric came out the other side. He's been sober for 30+ years and is still making great music.

What makes this particular autobiography so compelling is not just that Eric made it through, but it's also the way he tells his story. It's written in Eric's distinctive voice. He is often poignant but also often hilarious. He is unflinching in assessing his own mistakes, but he's not shy about pointing out the failures of others. This is an indictment of the music industry but it's also a celebration of music. More than that, it's also a celebration of life.

I mentioned this ebook to certain friends, who it turns out had been trying to pick up copies of the out- of-print edition. So, good timing indeed for the release ofthe 2016 ebook edition. It’s a frightfully good read, a veritable page turner, and a real slice of life - no, several slices, as it turns out.

When I grow up, I want to be a dysfunctional success too!
