For once I do agree with much of the hype that surrounds books by publishers and reviewers alike. This is a gripping novel. It continues on with Kate's former checkered career in London where Amy, a junior detective on her team investigating a triple murder, is brutally murdered. A year later it appears the serial killer has struck again in a different part of England.
Kate is headstrong, intuitive, steps on toes, prone to ignoring instructions from superiors, but does get the job of finding murderers done. Mr. Edger successfully conveys the annoyance Kate's colleagues feel towards her to the reader but eventually Kate wins out.
The tale begins with a first person telling of the incidents leading up to the death of the young detective, Amy. We learn the five Ws of Amy's death throughout the novel. Through this device Mr. Edger is able to both shed light upon Amy and cast suspicions upon her possible killer. From an adrenaline filling second chapter, the novel builds to a dramatic conclusion. Suspicions are not set aside until almost the last page. Highly recommended.
