the war was rough for Michael Keswick, the Duke of Cameron, but he managed to come out at the end alive due to the sacrifice of a good friend. Determined to stand by the promise he made to his late friend to look after the man's son, Michael is determined to make sure Henry doesn't fall for the beautiful Chloe Somerton; a woman with a questionable past that could get her into trouble. Will his interfering lead Michael to the happy ever after he never imagined he'd have, or will the torments of his past keep him and Chloe apart?

The moment I finished this book, I wanted to read the first two books of this series, because the secondary characters in Chloe's sisters sounded fascinating and their adventures to happy ever after even more so. Yet, in saying that, this book was everything I could have hoped for and more in the way it was captivating, fast-paced and had me wanting to discover more about the main characters, especially with what I learnt about Chloe soon after she and the hero came face-to-face for the first time. The way this story started had me liking the hero immediately, as he's determined to keep his promise to a fallen comrade and good friend. Will he be able to steer Henry, the son of his friend, in the right direction?

With the dialogue, it was very entertaining and delivered a wonderful combination of intense moments due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the hero; and moments that had me smiling because of how much of a challenge Chloe provided for Michael. She isn't about to back down from achieving her dream of marrying a suitable man just because of the hero's threats. Moreover, I enjoyed the heroine's back story. She had it tough growing up, but she's definitely turned her life around for the better.

I couldn't put it down!

I'll be completely honest; I wasn't sure if I'd like this book in the beginning, given how the synopsis read and how the story initially progressed. I formed certain opinions about Chloe in particular that gave me a "meehhhhh, not too sure about this book" feeling.

But, as the book went on and I learned more about Chloe and Michael, I LOVED it.

Talk about tortured. Michael, a battle-hardened war veteran, finds himself dealing with a certain affliction that I shall not name for fear of spoiling the story. His suffering was very well-written, and I was so happy that it eventually became a blessing in disguise.

And Chloe. She was no shrinking violet, that's for sure. I liked how she stood up to Michael and also took her fate into her own hands.

I met Chloe's two sisters, and I can't wait to double-back and read their stories as well! (This is totally a standalone book, but I loved this family so much I want to get to know them all!)

(I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)

I really enjoyed this book. Michael had returned home from the war a changed man. He's best friend stepped in front of him and was killed. He had a note on her pocket asking Michael to look after he's son Henry. Henry had his sites on Chloe. So did Michael.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Duke Meets His Match is all that I expect and want romance to be. 4 July 2017
By Isha Coleman - Published on Amazon.com
My love of historical romance is a longstanding one. It began with authors like Judith McNaught and Julia Quinn, but has expanded to include authors such as Darcy Burke and Vanessa Kelly among others. Tina Gabrielle sends me back to that time when I first discovered the awe of this magical genre. The battle of wills, the blending of hearts. Women of strength, times of desperation and domineering yet captivating men of means. The Duke Meets His Match is all that I expect and want romance to be. The place where hearts meet and wishes come true.

4.0 out of 5 stars ...' love is rare and special.' But can he acknowledge it? 10 July 2017

Chloe Somerton knew what poor was. Being poor as a young child had led her into illegal activities. Now the past was behind her. Chloe's sisters had married well and this was her time. Chloe had set her sights on the pleasing, wealthy, young earl, Lord Henry Sefton. (As Chloe was young as well this hardly seemed difficult to me. On the other hand Chloe's 'hand to mouth' existence as a child has made her older in experience of the not so charming side of life.)
Chloe had not reckoned with Henry's mentor--Michael Keswick, the Duke of Cameron. Michael is an emotionally battle scarred veteran of Waterloo. His scars, worn on the inside, are not obvious but just as deadly and damaging. Michael has a duty to his dead friend's son and thwarting Chloe becomes a central game. 'Chloe Somerton [might be] the picture of beauty, grace, and innocence,' but Michael recognizes her from the past and is determined that his young charge shall not succumb to her wiles. What he fails to recognize is the frisson of attraction that sizzles between himself and Chloe.
Chloe throws down the gauntlet. The battle is on. As Chloe attempts to bring Lord Henry to heel, she realizes that all is not well with Michael. Knowing how terrible memories can effect one's behaviour, Chloe finds herself compulsively drawn towards helping Michael despite the knowledge that he can destroy her. As the tug of their attraction for each other grows Chloe finds herself in a different sort of peril and Michael finds himself emotionally out of his depth where Chloe is concerned. And what of his responsibilities towards Henry? Hovering over all this is Michael's fear that in his traumatic episodes he will harm someone. That fact stops him from seeking his own happiness.
Gabrielle has used the historical background, the returned veterans of the European Theatre, combined with the plight of the poor, to effect. A pleasing end to the Somerton sisters' stories bringing (to my mind) a version of Beauty and the Beast revisited.

What begins as a battle of wills soon escalates into a fierce attraction. In Chloe, Michael finds peace from the memories of war, but he refuses to marry and she won’t settle for anything less.

My Thoughts:
I wish I had read this entire series. If books one and two are as well written as this one they are indeed not to be missed.
Chloe has a secret past that not even her sisters are privy to. While growing up she picked pockets to offset the expense of medicine needed by her. She knew the expense to be draining on her family even though her sisters never said so.
Michael has episodes caused by his devastating memories of war. He refuses to marry because of this.
He knows Chloe's secret and she soon discovers his devastating problem.
Will their mutual attraction be enough to overcome the issues from their pasts?
This well written and engaging story is not to be missed.
I gave this book 4.5 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 4 of 5 flames.
The attraction and subsequent reaction to it is an essential element in this story.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 15 July 2017
By Debra L. Martin - Published on Amazon.com

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Gabrielle and it was such an enjoyable read. Michael Keswick, Duke of Cameron, is a war hero, but he's brought back horrifying nightmares from the battle of Waterloo. When his path crosses with Miss Chloe Somerton, he recognizes her as the young thief picking pockets of rich dandys years before. With Michael threatening to reveal her secret, Chloe's ire is raised and she doesn't back down from the intimidating duke as explains her reason for thieving in her youth.

The sparks are flying between these two even though Chloe originally is trying to land the titled Lord, Henry, who Michael has taken under his wing since his father died at Waterloo. Henry is besotted with Chloe and Michael works hard to keep them apart, all the while, falling for Chloe himself. He has vowed never to marry because of his "episodes." Ms. Gabrielle does an excellent job of handling the sensitive PTSD aspect of Michael's character. War is hell and many men were scared by it although many in the period believed the condition showed weakness. I loved Chloe's compassionate nature not only for Michael, but also for little Emily. That added a nice touch to the story. My interest held until the end wondering if Michael come overcome his reluctance to subject Chloe to his episodes and dark moods. Fans of Regency romance will definitely enjoy this book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
