Since Gareth Fairfax lost his wife, the darkness in his heart continues to grow. Lashing out at anyone who opposes him, Gareth is stunned to face a lovely young woman opposite his dueling pistol. After discovering Helen’s deception, he offers her a choice: become his mistress or her brother dies.

Their devil’s bargain turns into a slow, sweet, intoxicating seduction. With each passing hour, Helen uncovers Gareth’s secret heartbreak and yet she can’t help but fall for the man who has ruined her. With Helen in his arms, Gareth wonders if he might yet be saved. All it takes is one passionate embrace, a kiss from the depths of his soul and a night of wild abandon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but appealing 21 May 2015

Helen Banks is a young woman in a lot of trouble. Her parents have both passed away and her immature brother, Martin, is rapidly gambling away all of the money they left to them. To make matters worse, Martin has acquired a significant debt to Gareth Fairfax; a well to do gentleman who Helen has been admiring from afar for some time. Gareth has had enough of Martin’s games and challenges the man to a duel to settle the debt. Helen, knowing that if her brother is killed she will have no one to look out for her safety, takes his place in the duel under the cover of a mask to try and save his life. But, when Gareth discovers the deception, he offers Helen a tantalizing new option: go to Gareth’s bed with him and pay off her brother’s debt with her body, an option that would ruin her status as a lady and any chance of marriage, or he will hunt down her brother and settle the debt with a pistol.
The Duelist’s Seduction by Lauren Smith is a short read, but one that will appeal to romance fans. The story rotates back and forth as Helen’s internally struggles with saving her own integrity or the life of her brother, while also wrestling with her own desire to be with the man that is creating the dilemma. While the story moves slow at points, it creates an interesting back-story for the characters that makes the read more interesting later on. As the first book in a series, the possibilities are wide open for this to be a truly romantic, yet tense, new series.
4.0 out of 5 stars What A Lovely Little Novella 6 February 2017
By Angie Mike - Published on Amazon.com

THE DUELIST'S SEDUCTION is a short novella about Helen Banks, a twenty-one-year-old young woman who is willing to sacrifice her own life in order to save her twin brother. Gareth Fairfax is a dark and lonely widower whose wife died when he was just twenty, and seven years later he's still a little lost. After he discovers Helen's true identity, he gives her an impossible choice: become his lover or watch her brother die...

This is the first book in 'The Seduction' series and was a truly lovely little romance. It took me about two hours to read and ended at 88% and location 1441 of 1644 on my kindle. I fell in love with Helen's bravery and heart, and though Gareth starts out a little reprehensible, I ended up really loving him too. The romance was beautifully written and the sex scenes were spicy, but also tender and sweet. It was an emotionally engaging read and just an absolute joy to witness Helen's light and laughter heal Gareth's bitter and broken soul. I did feel like the romance was rushed however, which was the only real flaw in an otherwise touching love story. Ms. Smith is an obviously talented author though and I can't wait to read more from her. In fact I've already pre-ordered the next book in this series "The Rakehell's Seduction" which stars Gareth's friend Ambrose, which I'm really looking forward to =)

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable historical romance! Recommended 2 September 2015

The Duelist's Seduction by Lauren Smith is the first book by this author that I have read and I enjoyed the whole experience. Reminding me of Shakespeare's Twefth Night where the heroine disguised herself as her twin brother, here too the heroine Helen Banks disguises herself as her twin to duel against Gareth Fairfax in order to save her blundering brother who owes the Duke money that he doesn't have!

The first thing that attracted me towards this book was the beautiful cover that had me intrigued so much that I felt compelled to checkout the blurb that again is catchy and made me preorder this book which was at a huge discount of just 99c then.

I liked Lauren's writing style where she managed to draw my attention and hold it all through the story. Right from the start I was plunged in action and an overall atmosphere of tension. The writing is simple, expressive and had me empathizing and connecting with the characters and events.

I loved Helen and admired her determination to save herself and her brother from ruin. She endured silently and despite all her brother's recklessness and irresponsible behaviour, she still loved him. Her strength in even the most dire situations made me love her even more. She stood strong against Gareth's humiliating conditions and showed that she was truly a lady despite his not-so-honourable demands from her.

I hated Gareth initially and didn't like his rude dismissal of Helen's plight. I disliked him even more when he gave Helen no option but become his mistress, ultimately ruining her life. But despite this initial hatred, I started liking Gareth in the later part of the book when I got a better insight into his life and by the end I was rooting for him. Just imagine the transformation! LOL

The romance between Gareth and Helen is slow to start but which then becomes intense and pretty steamy. The ending had me going misty eyed and rooting for a happily-ever-after for these two broken souls who found completion with each other.

The emotional play is beautifully brought out and makes this book a memorable one. I loved how Helen finally found her place in life and finally found love in the most unlikely place.

The only downside of the story is that it seems a bit rushed and I would have loved to see it get better depth, had more pages been devoted to it. Anyhow, for now also it's entertaining and fun.

All in all, The Duelist's Seduction is a fun, quick and enjoyable historical romance that I loved reading. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all lovers of historical romance. I loved Lauren's style and will be checking out her other books too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two hurt souls fall in love 4 April 2016
By Melissa - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I was certain I was going to dislike the Duelist Seduction, mostly because I have never particularly liked heroines who are enablers and Helen Banks is the absolute worst enabler imaginable. She actually is willing to fight a duel on behalf of her wastrel, self-indulgent brother. She fights for her brother’s honor and her opponent Gareth Fairfax has no idea he is pacing off against a woman. When he discovers this, he renegotiates Helen’s brother’s debt; Helen will pay the debt off at his estate.

Helen and Gareth are lost souls. Together they navigate through their sorrow of losing loved ones and having expectations dashed. Helen sees her life as more than her brother’s keeper. Helen’s fine personality shines with Gareth. She is thoughtful and genuine and compassionate. Gareth, who believes he could never marry after the death of his wife, falls for Helen’s unending kindness. By the end of this story, I really liked Helen and Gareth becomes a romantic hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a tasty little treat! 15 May 2015
By Robin Surface - Published on Amazon.com

I don’t normally read short stories, mainly because I like to submerge myself in a good, long book, but this one was worth it! I decided to take a chance on an author who is new to me, and I’m glad I did. I’m even happier that this short book leads to a series.

The author did a very good job of establishing interesting and deep characters in very little time. The reader gets a good feel for the characters right from the first scene. The main character, a spirited woman who takes charge, is open, funny and brave, even when she’s probably made a decision that will end her life.

The main male character is a good-looking man who has a reputation with the ladies. He seems a bit crass and jaded at first, but eaders don’t have to wait long to find out what’s below his rough exterior.

Even the supporting characters are quickly fleshed out and have interesting personalities.

There are lots of steamy scenes as Gareth slowly seduces Helen and moves her from innocent maiden to womanhood.

I read this book straight through and was happy to see that while the book was a complete story, it also leads to more books.

If you enjoy a romance with interesting characters and lots of steam, this is a great quick read.
