Set in the 1830’s, this isn’t a light-hearted romp like many romances set in that era. It begins with a young woman in desperate straits; Tessa St. Croix is in need of a rescuer.
Before I go any further, I’m going to put in a trigger warning; the ‘act of quiet violence’ described in the blurb is a rape. Like so many victims of sexual assault, Tessa blames herself; she flirted, she charmed, she ‘led him on’. And like so many, she suffers post-traumatic stress. The way both of these topics are addressed, and how Tessa slowly learns, with the support of her husband, to rise above and move past her trauma, is absolutely incredible. Charis Michaels doesn’t shy away from anything, dealing with the confronting realities faced by so many women of that era, in that their reputations were considered all-important and any blemish considered a disaster of the utmost magnitude, even when no fault of their own.
Joseph, the man who marries Tessa, doesn’t do well when she confesses on their wedding night that she’s expecting another man’s child. Ashamed, Tessa doesn’t explain the circumstances of conception, and Joseph leaves for a long sea voyage to the West Indies with anger and confusion bubbling over. Returning in less than ideal circumstances, he has to deal with having a wife he doesn’t know and a baby son not his own, and frankly I thought he did very well. His kindness and patience with Tessa as they worked through her issues together, his loving support of her goals and ambitions, were wonderful to read. A man like Joseph would be a treasure in any age, and I fell completely in love with him.
Tessa’s searing self-honesty brought a tear to the eye on occasion. Her feelings of guilt, her pain and doubt, the difficulties she faced as she tried to move forward with her life, were heart-wrenching and so terribly relatable. I highly recommend this book, which is part of a series called the Brides of Belgravia, and I’ll be making room for the rest of the series and more of Charis Michaels’ books on my TBR list in the future. Five stars, but with the warning that if you have triggers for rape or sexual assault, this might be one you need to avoid.

I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it so much that I not only bought this one but I also pre-ordered the next one. Wow. It's hard to believe this book is by the same author as the first one. It is one of the most drawn out, tedious books that I have encountered in quite a while. Tessa St. Croix is a pampered daughter of well-to-do parents. She is pretty, vain, and an outrageous flirt with many suitors. She also is pregnant after a one-time encounter (basically it was a rape) with a military man who refuses to "do right by her." So when her friends concoct a scheme to get husbands in name only, she sees a solution to her problem. Strangely enough, she falls for the man who is to "rescue" her and marries him without telling him of her condition. There were so many things wrong with this book. Tessa's actions with Joseph Chance, the man she marries, do not make sense. For a young woman who had a terrible encounter that left her pregnant, she certainly doesn't seem to be affected by it. She flirts and carries on (and acts more than a little forward) with Joseph. I just didn't care for her at all. But, then, I didn't care for the H or anything else in this book. I read to 50%, then skipped to the last chapter and epilogue. I don't feel that I missed a thing.
I rather liked the first in this series but this was a struggle to get through and I had enough at 80%. I didn't like these people and their preoccupation with beauty and colorful, beautiful clothes. Joseph was an orphan whose life struggles could have been more integrated into his growth as a character. Tessa, while her troubles helped her grow, there was so much focus on the external. There was a whole lot of tell rather than show. The dialogue was bland and flat with too much melodramatic action. He's forever growling with desire or whatever and I never saw why they should be so in love with each other. It all seemed very superficial. The whole telling of this story was boring. I'm torn about trying Sabine and Stoker's story.
I own every book that Charis Michaels has written. When I noticed she had out a new book I hadn’t read, I bought it without hesitation. I stopped reading half way through the book. Boring. There wasn’t any true chemistry build up beyond, she was blonde and pretty and he was handsome. She goes from being an empty headed flirt to a woman who has a baby by herself and becomes an expert in shipping, ports and harbor docking all by herself, while her husband she tricked into marrying her sails away when she finally tells him she was carrying another man’s baby. Nothing was believable nor exciting. Charis Michaels is a better writer than this book .

This is second book in the Brides of Belgravia series and I would highly recommend reading it as part of the series. We have met the hero and heroine, Joseph and Tessa in the first book of this series. Joseph was also a secondary and much loved character in the Bachelor Lords of London series. I was so excited to read his book and I have to say that he has matured into the most perfect hero even though he behaved like an idiot sometimes. Both the characters of the hero and heroine are beautifully written. I really adored Tessa’s character and could feel her pain and self recrimination with her history of sexual abuse. I liked how the author handled this storyline without showing that the treatment of a victim is like a magic pill. Joseph’s patience and love for Tessa just made my heart full and happy. If you are looking for a heart wrenching but ultimately sexy and romantic book, pick up this one for sure.
Oh, this was a lovely, heart-wrenching tale of love and betrayal. Poor Tessa finds herself in an extraordinarily difficult predicament and tries to solve it the only way she can think to - with lies on top of lies, one atop the other until she just can't see her way around the wall of deception she built. And all while falling in love with gentle, charming, kind Joseph, the man she built the wall to capture. And then when the two lovers finally manage to make their marriage-of-convenience-gone-terribly-inconvenient into something resembling a happy union, they face another obstacle and must learn to communicate and trust one another if they hope to find their HEA. You might want to keep a box of tissues nearby.
