Maurice Mundy, a recently retired detective, returns to Scotland Yard. Ten years ago a boy was murdered. Another look at the case reveals that a sex worker was also murdered that same night, but nothing linked the two murders at the time. As Mundy probes into the events of that fateful night, will his maverick approach be a dangerous step too far?

When was this written? 1954?

I have read all of the books in the Hennessey/Yellich series and have now got to the point where I play bingo as I read them. Hennessey talks to his dead wife- check. Yellich teaches his son how to tell the time- check. A room smells of furniture polish and air freshener- check Webster returns home to find that his wife has made a salad - check. The story unfolds mainly through dialogue, some of which can be extremely tedious and the characters use phrases that I have never heard anyone use in real life (I'm 51) such as 'motor car'- do people really say that in 2018? Turnbull also repeats certain phrases far too often for my liking- e.g. 'he held eye contact', several characters say 'little old me' etc I read this books probably for the same reason that I still watch Coronation Street- I don't want to give up on something I've invested time in. There is no conflict between the characters, which some could see as a flaw but I quite like the fact that Hennessey takes charge and all the others in the team do what he asks without questioning it. If you're after car chases, marital infiidelity etc then this book isn't for you. If you like a well plotted - if somewhat plodding- police procedural, then buy this book.

So much more than a crime story. Peter Turnbull is the consummate professional whose novels are character studies, and his characters ring true in their dialogue, their thinking and their relationships. He is an English Simenon whose novels I enjoy reading, and re-reading.
