Now THIS is a good book to read at the beach
Reviewed in the United States on 17 May 2019Verified Purchase
Finally a great book for the beach....or just great anytime. I have searched for months for a good book and so many disappointments despite good reviews including top book clubs. I just read a book about a family moving to Alaska that was sooo depressing and so many Amazon reviews said ‘great beach read’. I don’t know what beach they visit but not my idea of a way to relax on vacation. Drawing Home is one I found through Kirkus Reviews and it did not disappoint. I was totally engaged in the story and could not wait to get back to it. Thank you Jamie Brenner for taking your time to tell such a good story. I am off now to try more of your books.

Predicable story, vibe of a bad Lifetime movie
Reviewed in the United States on 3 July 2019Verified Purchase
I was all in for a fun summer read, but this was so poorly done that it was distracting. The story is very predictable -- you can see the resolution of each character's story coming from chapter three, basically. I get that romance may have an obvious ending, but must every plot have one? A lot of it felt stolen from Gilmore Girls -- single young mom, angsty teen, the mom works in a hotel and they live in a small town, several quirky locals. It was Rory and Lorelai with none of the witty banter. Perhaps the worst element was that the author constantly explained, in obvious and laborious detail, what everyone was thinking and feeling. We know the mom is stressed; telling us in a bonus paragraph that she's stressed -- and recapping the whole story to remind us what she's stressed about -- just makes the book plodding and awkward. It'd be an okay Hallmark or Lifetime movie; no one needs an internal life for those. But this was just tedious.

This captivating story works on many levels and stays with you

I'm a big Jamie Brenner fan, and I have to say she's outdone herself with Drawing Home. The book is a gripping read with a compelling array of characters. No second-string players here! Somehow, Brenner lets the reader feel for the situations of all her characters, despite the conflicts that ensue between them. From old age to coming of age, motherhood, romance, and loss to redemption, Brenner manages to convey the motivations of each character. Until she brings it all together--in an ending I've reread five times--the conflict is so profound you can't imagine how they can ever work things out. I shed tears more than once reading this masterful book. I bet you will too!

A delightfully authored story that exposes the complicated aspects of each character. The struggles to the greatest talents fertilized through relationships.
