There is a growing interest in "dramaturgy" as a critical concept and as a practical process. The book outlines different perspectives on the terms "dramaturgy" and "the dramaturg" and aims to introduce both concept and practice to those encountering the subject for the first time. Using case studies drawn from contemporary practice and suggesting areas of further study, the authors provide a strong insight into contemporary debates and new directions for the future.

Just another book on drama.....(Yawn)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2013Verified Purchase
I bought this on the recommendation of a drama lecturer at uni, and to be frank it was just another academic book that was a waste of time and money. (Most academic books are!) And there are so many of them! There were some good bits in it but on the whole it did nothing to add to the already burgeoning pool of dramatic knowledge already out there. OK, so we have this new theory of dramaturgy! So what! A lot of it it just common sense, and people in theatre have been using that for umpteen years in various guises. Do we really need it re-packaged and re-invented yet again? Buy it if you must but you can still put on a cracking play without it!

Great book. Dramaturgy is basically a "new" job. In this book you will find a little bit of history, just to give you an idea of Dramaturgy as a job. How Brecht suffer in order to become one of the most known dramaturgist, and everything is compare to recent examples. It's a modern point of view of dramaturgy.
The book also refers to the different styles of dramaturgy, and how to work with those styles.
A must book for those who are looking to get more information on Dramaturgy, since there's not too many focus on this topic... and for everyone who wants to know more about theatre research.

Can you say OVERKILL?

The authors mention that it would be hubris to try to explain (simply) what a dramaturg does. I find THAT hubris. (Note to authors--if you are going to work in a field, you should be able to explain what you do in a couple sentences.) Seriously, this isn't brain surgery here. Their view of dramaturgy is so overinflated, that you could get rid of directors, critics, designers...virtually EVERYONE but the actors, and just hire a dramaturg. This seems like a couple people who wanted to be published, and really overreached the topic....
