Get a little concerned about "time travel"based books, they sometimes get caught up more than necessary with attempts to explain "how"rather than use it as a device to allow the plot to develop. This doesn't and you soon get into the story. I liked the character development, though early on you suspected the real identity of one of the characters as after all, this is a "buddy story."
Main character develops nicely as the story unfolds and I got to the end looking forward to sequel, which is always the sign of an enjoyable read.

Can't wait to get started on book two. Found it to be an easy book to read and hard to put down. I felt like I was able to see the story unfold in front of me, and I love an author that can do that. A story of survival, friendships and magic, a pleasure to read.

I liked this fantasy and I'm looking forward to book 2. I like series and I have great hopes for this one. The plot is interesting despite the fact that it includes all the old favourites- dwarves, elves, magic, dragons, a seemingly unstoppable villain and of course a flawed hero. While the writing could use a more editing in parts, it is strong and has a modern voice. Anderson does fight scenes really well and I think male readers will enjoy the grittiness. Bring on Book 2!

Having read several Anderson co-authored books of the sci-fi/fantasy genre I was very keen to start this book. After the first ten or so pages I felt a little let down by the writing style and the need to re-word sentences. Fortunately the story-line is interesting and kept me pushing through until that magic moment of knowing what to read and what to skim occurred, thus allowing the completion of what is a very exciting tale of other worlds, portals and magic. The end of book one demands that book two be read, so it is important to relax into the story and not get hung up on the 'he said, she said' repetitiveness of the words which at times feel like a young teenagers story telling rather than a sci-fi notable author.

This series is written fairly well. It's your archetypical fantasy novel with elves, dwarves and an evil sorcerer threatening the world, but there is a twist, the main character Ethan grew up on Earth and he has to come home to Lumnia to save the day.
When I read the sample I was wondering whether that would be corny and off putting, but it works out well.
Definitely worth a read.

A well imagine saga of dwarves, tyrants, mages and humans. Book one left me wanting to read more to see how the dragons would help in establishing justice and peace not only for their own existence but wll who were in their side of the conflict over evil.
