It is open world, the combat is a lot of fun and the story, while not perfect, is enjoyable.
Be sure you mute the characters that walk around with you, because they get incredibly annoying with their sentences repeated over and over, during combat.
Lots of backtracking, but it is enjoyable. If you like games like monster hunter, this game is kinda giving you a similar experience, with big opponents that you can climb on, to attack on their weak spot. Kinda like shadow of the colussus, but in a smaller scale.
AI is decent; they do their job to distract the enemies while you hit them; although don't count on advanced AI tactics; stick with the basics. You can issue commands to your companions, which most of the time works.
Graphics is really nice, considering that the game is on Switch and that the developers did cram in a cartridge, a large area. The textures are HD and most of the game has been upscaled; but some areas still show some old textures and low quality visuals; but the are few and not that noticeable after a while. Popping is an issue; since the devs decided to keep the game at a steady 30 FPS. Things may appear in front of you while you move around in large areas, but you get used to after a while.
Visuals and overall graphic, mark quite an accomplishment for the dev team; what they did was no easy task, and it looks better than Skyrim to be honest.
Sound is great; with decent voiceover and good music and effects.
Overall a great game on the switch, that show a bit of issues, due to the fact that it is running on a glorified mobile platform, but it did age well and will give you at least 40-50 hours of content, based on how fast you want to go through the story and side missions.
So a little about DDDA. You have pawns, one is yours that you create and two are other people from the interwebs. The rest is mostly normal RPG affair. Except the combat where you have to climb giant monsters to hit their weak spots. Fight swarms of enemies. Dungeon craw. Oh, and do things to get stuff. Normal RPG affair, except for one last part. Your mission will cancel, and all the freaks come out at night.
So why did I end up really liking this game enough to buy it again. Well first the music stuck with me, the combat, and the big monster fights are satisfying. The monster fights can be really tuff. Basically it was the combat and the balance between my character and my three pawns that makes the combat so enjoyable. The hits feel impactful. Something about the world itself reminds me of a Tolkien universe mixed with a NES Capcom addictiveness.
So how is the Switch port. Well there is more pop in. But overall it looks very similar to the PS4 port, with less LOD, less distance objects, and lower res shadows. Though it is built off of the PC version. However, it runs at a pretty steady 30fps unlike the 360/PS3 original, and 720p portable/1080p docked. So for the Switch it looks really good. Capcom did an excellent job not rushing it.
Should you pick Dragons Dogma? Well if you like Skyrim or Dark Souls, than yes. But if you don't like difficult RPGs than maybe not. But I warn you, you will be missing one of the best rpgs for the Switch. Think of this as a slow burn type of game, where the heroes journey not the objective is the fun. If you're on the fence and have a decent PC, you can often get it for under $10 and there is some stellar mods around. But even at $30 you are getting a lot of content for money, with the added plus of having it as a hand held. If you are interested in open world adventure games and missed out, I suggest giving this a shot. If not now, get it on sale.
