Loved Ezra, warmed to Holland at the end.
Really excited and have wanted to read Ezra’s story since I realised he was undercover.
Not sure if this was short or I just enjoyed it that much but it took me no time to get through this book.
Loved how this starts out and that these two have a history.
Cannot say I liked Holland and her focus on her story to the exclusion of being smart and sensible but I did love her interactions with Ezra (newt).
Holland is a gung-ho reporter and is in the middle east following a story about human trafficking. She stupidly believes she is supposed to be meeting with someone high up in the ring. She is being set up and ignores the warnings her other side and her bodyguards are giving her.
By wanting this story so badly and ignoring her instincts, she and her team of bodyguards gets caught up in a trap situation.
She finds herself taken by the very trafficking ring she is trying to expose. She is also the cause of one of her bodyguards being tortured.
Holland does at least acknowledge these faults and problems.
I loved Ezra, his behaviour was that of a typical alpha male. Slow to realise Holland is his mate and only when she is in trouble does his thinking clarify.
Hope Doonan and his team get their own stories.
Wickedly Hot Alpha males that can't see past their noses......sigh.
This story grabs your attention from the start to finish, with a chance meeting and regrets, out of control passion and stubborn arrogant alpha males that make you want to shake them. This world is addictive, and you get to meet more characters I can't wait to hear their stories.

With the drugs they’ve administered, he’s left half transformation with a Dragon’s mouth and eyes, talons, and a naked bruised and bartered human form.
Starving and in pain, he thinks back to the little girl he saved twenty years ago; the girl surrounded by fire! Who didn’t burn.
The girl called a ‘demon’ by a father who pierced gasoline on her and tried to kill her.
Also, he remembers Holland, the woman on her twenty first birthday who he beds, and nearly claims, almost losing his control of his dragon form.
His vampire friend, helps him to hunt for the woman after he runs from her, but to no avail.
We have Elements of Stephen King’s Firestarter here; shady government figures and mercs trying to kill or capture powerful supernaturals, like Holland with her fire-related abilities. Also, the shady villains part has been seen throughout the narrative thread in this PSI Ops linked series.
This book however, brings us to the Middle East and a whole bunch of new characters.
As an investigative journalist, Holland is a wanted target. I particularly liked her Irish guard Donnie, as well as Echo the very large dog, who I suspect is something more.
Switching POV between Ezra and Holland, it’s clear they’ve spent their recent years searching for each other.
As well as the integral fights, and expected level of violence, we have the ongoing supernatural traffickers storyline and the whole ‘mates’ romance and erotica thread.
As always though, the sense of humour with Mandy Roth is great.
Caged and hungry, Ezra reflects on the maggot riddled food before him, and the gnarly vampire hood Felix Who has him prisoner.
“Last time he’d eaten a vampire it had taken him a month to stop burping up the taste of twice-baked dead guy.”
It’s a sardonic, ironic wit, and there are frequently laugh out loud moments.
I especially loved Holland as a child, calling her lizard-man ‘Newt’ and telling him off for littering, in the middle of their escape.
Amidst it all of course, we have aspects of PTSD and past trauma. Thankfully, as with many Romances, it affects both genders, not just a ‘damsel in distress’.
In fact, I love that a lot of the female characters can kick arse.
As for the writing, Roth’s skills appear to be growing and this book is much stronger than early incarnations.
Really enjoyed this one.
This is the story of Ezra and Holland, it's the second book to the Shadow Ops series, which is a spin off from the Immortal Ops/PSI worlds. It can be read alone, but I really recommend that you read this in series order, starting with Immortal Ops, you can also find the reading order on Mandy's web page @ [...]
Never mind being hooked from first chapter I was hooked from first page. This has everything packed into it what PNR readers want. It's brimming full of all kinds of action from the get go. You've got your good guys, bad guys, lust, Romance, great fighting scenes, an alpha male Dragon who just keeps putting his foot in it with his woman, a strong female lead who doesn't need a man in her life, hilarious humour, explosive sexual encounters, and that all needed HEA.
Ezra knew not to stray from the mission, but he just couldn't stand by and allow harm come to innocents, and so in doing so he was now chained up in a container on a ship going gods knows where. It's then he feels it, the little girl he saved all them years ago, she's calling out to him again through the ether, it's also then he realises she's his mate, and he will do anything to get to her.
Holland made it through college unscathed, but her darkness inside her frightens her more now than when she was a little girl, as she has grown, so has the strength of the darkness. While out in the middle east following up on leads for her trafficking story, she also had another lead she was chasing and this one had nothing to do with her journalism. She was trying to find the man who saved her from the fire when she was only five years old. 'Newt' her lizard man, he had always been there in her thoughts. Getting close to her meeting she starts to feel its all wrong and so does her security detail, but before they could make it make to the SUV all hell breaks loose, and instantly making her think of Newt and wishing he was there to help her again.
I'm not going to give away anymore of the storyline, if you want to find out what happens in between all I have told you then your gonna have to get the book. In this story you get to meet old and new characters, just make sure you make yourself some quality quiet time, cause believe me you won't want to put the book down once you start.
If I could give this more than the five stars allowed I would.
