DRAGON KING by Donna Grant is the latest entry into the multi-authored 1001 DARK NIGHTS series as well as Donna’s Dark Kings paranormal, romance series focusing on the continuing struggle of the Dragon Kings and their one-time ally and friend King Ulrik. DRAGON KING is a novella that focuses on the awakening of Dragon King Arian as a war between the Dragons and Fae is on the horizon.

SOME BACKGROUND: Hundreds of years earlier the Dragon Kings were betrayed by Ulrik’s human female lover and in retaliation Con-the King of Kings- and the other Dragon Kings killed the woman who revealed the existence of the dragons to mankind. What ensued was the devastation of the dragon species, and a war between dragon and man. To contain Ulrik’s anger and vengeance for the death of the woman that he loved, the Dragon King’s locked away Ulrik’s magic, and sent Ulrik and his Silver Dragons to sleep. But Ulrik has awoken before his time, and with it comes an alliance with the Dark Fae as they set their sights on uncovering the location of a secret weapon known only to King Constantine with the potential to destroy all of the Dragon Kings.

DRAGON KING follows Grace Clark-a romance author and writer who lost her muse. Her publisher has offered Grace a three week extension but writer’s block continues to hamper Grace’s attempts at writing her story. A trip to Scotland finds Grace pulled towards the mountain where Dragon King Arian has recently awoken, and with it will come an immediate attraction to one another as Arian must defend the human female against the Dark Fae and King Con.

The relationship between Arian and Grace is quick to develop.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved Arian and the story of how this mountain became ... 26 August 2015

Dragon King is story number 6.5 in author Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series and novella number 12 in the 2015 1,001 Dark Nights Series. I’m a huge Donna Grant fan and an equally huge 1,001 Dark Nights fan. Add them together and what do you get? Magic, I tell you. I adored this story and want a dragon of my own!
Hibernating Dragon King Arian and romance author Grace and up together in a most unlikely chance meeting. Grace has no idea just what she’s stumbled upon and Arian is transfixed by Grace’s personality and beauty. Both equally wary and curious of one another, they form a bond and attraction that I can only describe as delicious.
I loved Arian and the story of how this mountain became his bed of sorts. I loved how curious he was about Grace and how enamored and taken he was with her and her quirky nature. I also loved how kind and caring he was with her. He melted my heart with his tenderness and caring (even though he played a bit on her weakness to get her to stay with him…I know, I know, but I can totally forgive him for that!). I also loved Grace. She is real and relatable with a great personality and a tenacious attitude when it came to her writing. She also broke m heart when we learned of her past love life.
Ms. Grant wrote one of my favorite paragraphs in any book, and it came when Grace and Arian became intimate. She wrote that Grace had been writing passion wrong…because it had been so long since she had experienced true passion and she forgot what it actually felt like. That one paragraph had me hoping like a feind these two would somehow make things work.
Of course that would involve the little obstacle of Arian being a dragon. Luckily, Grace being as amazing as she is, it wouldn’t be the biggest problem they had to overcome. Now, I won’t give anything away but I will tell you that Ms. Grant totally nailed the ending and it was movie worthy!
Even if you’ve never even thought of picking up a book with dragons in it, I urge you to give this series a try. It is one of the best paranormals out there and Ms. Grant continues to be an auto-buy author for me! Thank you Ms. Grant and thank you 1,001 Dark Nights for a fantastic read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Liked the Idea... 28 September 2015

While I was off on holiday a few weeks back I purchased this novella only to find it wouldn’t update to my Kindle until I actually got home. Not the Novella’s fault of course, nor the Kindle’s just my own for having a really old one that wouldn’t log on to any other internet provider than my own.
Anyway, needless to say I was viewing this read with great anticipation, this being the first read focused solely on Dragons. The thought of them quite intrigued me after having my fill of vamps and werewolves, shifters and demons.
Unfortunately for me, I was in for a bit of a disappointment. Oh, the premise held promise and the Dragons were fine. They seemed sufficiently regal and dangerous, brooding and, of course, gorgeously handsome. There was just something a little lacking in the telling.
The heroine, Grace, after suffering writers block for months, suddenly finding her nirvana on the Dragon’s mountain spits out page after page of perfect prose which just seemed to me to be a little unbelievable. I know it’s a story about magical creatures so you might just say, “So, it’s magic!” Well no, because she’s human. Dragons are magic, humans are not. I know the story goes that Robert James Waller apparently wrote ‘The Bridges of Madison County’ in two weeks which is a pretty amazing feat, but a book in two days? Yeah, just not buying it.
And then for Arian, the Dragon King in question, to go from suspicion to desire to love all without real transition smacked – dear I say it - of author manipulation rather than being character driven.
This was, of course, a novella, so the author had to cram a whole lot of feeling into a small amount of words. She just didn’t hit the mark for me. I have, however, read some authors who are amazing when given the freedom of a full length novel who find the restrictions of a book only 30,000 words long a little difficult and aren’t performing at their best. So what I’m saying is that the writing wasn’t so awful that I won’t give this author the chance to wow me with a further full length story about the Dragon Kings in her series (and there is a s*** ton to choose from – Donna Grant seems to be as prolific with the prose as Grace it would seem), because I actually quite liked the idea of them - and that they were Scottish and had a sexy accent. (I know, call me shallow)
5.0 out of 5 stars Donna Grant's 1001 Dark Nights 8 September 2015

As with all of Donna Grant's books, be they about the Dragon Kings, the Druids, or Warriors, you are completely entertained from beginning to end. The Dragon King novels and novellas always leave me eagerly awaiting the next one. I absolutely love spending time with these amazing cast of characters. They are a unique combination of the honor and amazing strength of the warriors of old, with the combinations of more liberated women than they are often use to. This series is one that's easy to recommend to friends. I have read almost every book she has ever written, and would buy any book I found she has written. Yep, I think she's that good!
5.0 out of 5 stars Arian and Grace the perfect combination 9 February 2016

Yet another Dragon King that I have fallen in love with. Donna Grant continues her Dark Kings stories with Arian, a King who has awoken after sleeping for over 600 years.
You will love Arian and Grace's story - author of fiction falling for a Dragon. Sounds like someone we all know and love!!!
Storms and Con, the King of Kings, threaten to keep these two apart - but highly unlikely that's going to happen. Right??
Thank you Ms Grant for yet another magnificent dragon to dream about.
Definitely deserves 5 stars and more.
4.0 out of 5 stars Another Dragon King finds his mate 29 August 2015

The relationship between Arian and Grace is quick to develop. Arian believes Grace is his mate but Con’s distrust of the human species finds Arian in an emotional battle with the King of Kings, and a struggle to let walk away the woman with whom he is falling in love. The $ex scene is seduction and hot.

Several of the Dragon Kings play a secondary and supporting role; Ulrik’s presence is by way of mention; the Dark Fae continue to seek out the entrance to Dreagon in search of the elusive and secret weapon.

DRAGON KING is a welcome addition to the Dark Kings series; a quick read that sees another Dragon King finding his mate- the other half to his soul. Con continues to battle his hatred and distrust of humans-his anger and bitterness worsens as the Dragon Kings find their mates from within the human population. Donna Grant’s DARK KING series is a must read; I love the supernatural world of the Dragon Kings and the women whom they love.
