In the small country town of Dungower, little goes on that local journalist Joni Miller can write about in any gritty detail. But when it becomes known that a convicted child sex offender is living in their midst, the town is thrown into turmoil. Meanwhile, Joni’s own family secret begins to unravel, and the uncomfortable truth emerges as the town plays out as judge and jury.

Despite such a heavy subject matter, this book is a surprisingly gentle and engrossing read. I couldn't put it down. The small town within which it is set is realistically and respectfully drawn, and this is of course because of how the characters who inhabit it and indeed make it are presented. It is full of warm and believable characters who, like all people, are trying to muddle their way through life, with all the complex, challenging and traumatic scenarios it presents. The subject matter is truly terrible but SJ Finn does not resile from exploring all of the difficult questions that the existence of paedophilia within our communities raises for individuals, the community and society broadly.

Peodaphilia is such a difficult topic and I thought SJ finn made the reading easy. The character details and their individual stories and voices drew me in and gave me deeper insight into the problems and feelings around peodaphiles living in our communities. I enjoyed reading this book and that is testament to SJ Finn's skill of creating interesting characters and stories to weave around the main theme.
