The Smart Home video doorbell was something I really didn’t think I needed but once I got it and installed it I was pretty impressed by what it could do.
The doorbell comes in a pretty nice package and the build quality is really solid, basically comprised of two components-a bracket that you secure to your door or nearby wall, and the camera itself which snaps into the bracket and is secured by a security screw. The doorbell has two custom sized rechargeable batteries which came at about 75% charged, which I think is normal and restricted by shipping regulations. I haven’t been able to test how long the last but I’m guessing it’s for a while since they took another seven hours to become 100% charged.
Getting the doorbell up and running was not so quick as the instructions were brief but once I figured it out it was really simple. You need to download an app and from the app you configure the unit as well as a separate indoor chime.
The separate chime is a small hockey puck-sized unit which is USB powered and must be plugged in to work. It’s purpose is solely to provide a ring sound when the doorbell is pressed, and for the adults, we don’t really need it since the app on our phones will notify us when someone presses the button.
The app is pretty decent and you can use it to access live video anytime as well as view historical triggered events that can be saved an SD card, which it came with one, or to a paid subscription service ($2.99/month) the cloud. I’m sticking with the SD card, as I’m not a fan of paying a monthly fee. And I should mention there is no ability to save anywhere else such as your own FTP or other server.
I couldn’t really identify any significant cons about this product. I would say that there is a slight delay from the time someone presses the doorbell and you can get the video up and running to see who it is, maybe 5 to 7 seconds. That could be normal and expected with any doorbell but I wish it was faster.
Overall I like this doorbell particularly in its design as it’s got a very solid feel and modern look so it’s nice looking at my door. I thought the price was reasonable and with the included SD card and ability to save video to the card and no reliance on some outside service, I think this doorbell is a winner and I rate it a 5.
