If you haven't read her previous books in this series then you really should do yourself a favour as each book is more than worth your while and you definitely will not regret it.
This story is about Laire and Erik two young people that couldn't be more different. Their love story is beautiful and special only to be brought to a halt with lies and secrets.
Erik is the son of the governor of North Carolina. Local royalty of sorts. He is finishing college and planning to go to law school. Laire is a fisherman's daughter on a local island that time has forgotten, the tenth generation of Cornishes to live on the island. No tourists. No cell phones. Dial up Internet in limited locations. She dreams of going away to college to study fashion design. They meet when Laire delivers fresh crabs for a party at the governor's island mansion, and there is an instant attraction. But Erik's family would never accept a fisherman's daughter, and Laire's family would disown her for dating a dingbatter (outsider). Can they find a way to be a part of each other's worlds?
The plot was interesting and somewhat suspenseful. Laire's life seemed to be one tragedy after another, and I kept thinking, "Won't she ever get a break?" The characters were well developed and immediately likable, although I was frustrated at how quick they both were to lose faith in each other when their families put obstacles in their way. Erik was sweet, patient, and romantic. Laire was naive but very brave. The secondary character of Judith really warmed my heart.
This was my first book by Kate Regnery. I struggled through the first couple of chapters because they were a bit slow moving and corny feeling, but I'm glad I pushed through. Don't Speak really touched me, and it's one of the few books I've ever felt inclined to re-read. I look forward to looking up other modern fairy tales by Kate Regnery.
A Book Lover's Emporium
I'm a HUGE fan of Katy's stories, especially her Modern Fairytale series and this time she has really outdone herself. There wasn't I thing that I didn't adore about this book!!!
Laire and Erik, god I think they're my favourite couple of Katy's. Their love for one another despite their differences just did me in. I was a goner from the first moment they laid eyes on each other. How could I not? He wanted her and he pursued her, and she could do little to fight the pull she felt toward him.
And sweet and also sexy Erik has definitely pushed past ALL of Katy's other heroes and now has a permanent place in my heart. He did everything right!!! He was sweet, flirty, and he was never once embarrassed of Laire. Did he lie and keep her a secret? Yes! But not because he wasn't bursting at the seams to tell everyone. He had to protect her, and that was the only way he knew how to do it.
I'm going to stop here because I don't want to ruin anything for someone who hasn't read it yet. And if you haven't, I've got to tell you that's a shame because you're really missing out. This has definitely hit my top reads of 2017!!!
And the little homages to The Little Mermaid did not go unnoticed. They were subtle but if you've ever watched the movie you'll catch them. ❤
This is simply beautiful, the characters, the setting, the story but mostly the writing. Katy writes in such a way that you feel like your there, you can smell the ocean her words are evocative.
Laire is a fishermans daughter who lives a sheltered life on the island of Corey, she's such a sweet girl but very naive not just to the outside world but she knows nothing about men. Erik is the sophisticated Governors son who sweeps her off her feet. I loved how gentle he was with Laire when explaining about the opposite sex, he took his time and didn't pressure her or rush her to explore their feelings for each other.
They spend a summer falling in love but when the summer ends they are tragically torn part. When they meet up years later can they get past all the secrets, lies and past hurts to have a future or is a HEA not in their future.

I loved what the author did with the story, the twist with a modern theme and I love second chances.
Laire is a fisherman's daughter for a small town island when she meets the governor's son Erik, their life couldn't be more different, but opposite's attract.
Laire always wanted more in life than her sisters and father wanted, she wanted a life off the island and more than to marry an islander man, she wanted to follow her dreams.
So when she meets Erik he might and possibly be her Prince Charming, after spending the summer lost in each other, but with every fairytales there is evil, jealousy, hurt, betrayal and loss.
So will Erik and Laire be able to forgive and forget the past and have their own fairytale ending.
This was a sweet innocent love story with all the subtle hints of the Little Mermaid, but different with a more grown up feel.
Don’t Speak was so beautifully crafted that it not only stole my breath, but my heart,& my soul too, while reminding me how important it is to have hope, to never give up on my dreams & to always believe that goodness & love will always prevail. This my friends is what a love story should represent, it is love in its purest form & it’s most definitely the thing that fairytales are made of. It's first love, second chance love, forever love.
Lairs Cornish is our beautifully brave, stubborn, strong & pure of heart heroine. She is without doubt one of my all time favourite leading females. A fishermans daughter, sheltered from the world on a small Outer Banks Island where traditions & expectations are the lifeblood of the small community. Although she loves her heritage & the life she was born too, she longs for more & is determined to break free from the future that she knows is expected from her.
Her courage, conviction & determination is in abundance, as she struggles with the battle that brews between her need for more & her family. For Laire, life is an adventure she longs to live & so when an opportunity to run an errand for her father to the mainland arises, she grasps it with both hands. Little did she know just how much that trip would change her life forever & how the dark haired prince who lives in the castle, would show her the true meaning of love & sadly the pain of heartache.
Erik Rexford is our loveable hero. Tall, dark, gorgeous & smooth in a cute roguish kind of way. Born into wealth & position, he is the son of North Carolina's Governor, with a future laid before him that he doesn't really want. Celebrating his 21st birthday at the families holiday home, he knows this is his last summer of fun & freedom.
A chance encounter with the most stunning girl he has ever seen, leaves him desperate & aching for more. Never has he been so captivated by a girl, it's like her heart & soul sings to him & he's unable to or wants to resist the pull that seems to bind them. You see, Erik craves for one perfect summer with the girl from the sea. But what what he doesn't realise is, just how much the summer will change the man he is yet to become.
Innocence meets experience & two hearts become one over this wonderful summer. Their love blooms, their connections deepens & their hopes & dreams are woven into a future they both long for, But with goodness & purity, comes darkness & ugly. For some, their love is seen as forbidden, land verses sea, money versus working class. It's from this black that betrayal runs thick, is cloaked in lies & laced in deceit. It will change outcomes, break hearts & cause a ripple effect that will be felt for years to come.
Oh how their whole journey wrecked me. My heart hurt for the innocent young girl who was robbed of a future she so whole heartedly deserved, but still fought for a life she could be proud of. She is so painfully real. Her innocence is endearing , her passion is inspirational & her capacity to love is simply stunning. And it broke for the boy who became a man, so lost, empty & alone. Who refused to love, but also refused to let go of the girl who stripped him bare. Then... Well It burst with honest to God happiness as two become one, that finally the lost become found & the whispered dreams of the past, become the realty of their forever .
Katy’s modern retelling of the classic ‘A Little Mermaid’, is such a stunningly beautiful, heartbreakingly sad, epic story of love. A love that is born from the innocence of youth by two hopeful souls, that is then forced to endure such soul shattering, life altering pain, but is too powerful & pure to be beaten or extinguished. She blew me away with both of these amazing characters & everything they overcame. She delivered a story of love & hope. A fairytale of dreams, of finding your true other, of forever meaning forever.
Every girl who believes in fairytales needs this book, because who doesn't love it when the handsome prince falls in love with the ordinary girl & they live happily ever after ❤❤
This is a poignant tale of a young woman's desperate attempt to escape the only world she knows and make a different life for herself. Also the struggle of a rich young man to conform to society he was born into.
Their separation was heart-rending, with Laire raising a fatherless daughter unbeknownst to Erik who's exorcising his own demons. Their reunion was extraordinary beautiful.
Katy Regnery is an outstanding wordsmith. Five stars.
