Hurwitz's experiment flounders in the jungle

I love Gregg Hurwitz's books, and three stars is the lowest I've ever rated one of them. "Don't Look Back" is a little slow getting started for Hurwitz, but did finally get its hooks in me. Once I was hooked it seemed like a prolonged story of the big bad wolf trying to kill the three little pigs. During reading I was troubled some by alien environment of the sub-tropical jungle in Southern Mexico. The un-realness of the environment was compounded by topography that was hard to make sense of, such as where the river was flowing down or up relevant to the locations critical to the story. A map of the fictitious story land showing the roads, trails, zip line, grotto, bridge, villages, etc would help a lot to make the environment more believable. The way that be big bad wolf finally meets his doom is clever, but not supported by science. Politically and socially, the novel may be even more relevant to 2019 than when the book was first published. The female protagonist and the villain are well developed and the best parts of the book.

I'm a huge Gregg Hurwitz fan. I think I've read all his books. So I had very high expectations for this book. And I was pretty disappointed through the first 45% of the book. It seemed a little boring and I was having trouble having any interest in the characters, both good and bad. But, hey, when I hit the 45% mark, this book took off like a rocket! Maybe it was just me -- having trouble connecting in the first part of the book. But the non-stop rush from mid to finish was well, well worth the read. The bad guy is a formidable foe and nut job. All the secondary characters are interesting, some irritating, but essentially worth rooting for. And Eve, the heroine, is a force to be reckoned with. She is subservient at first, stands back and follows. But she soon realizes that no matter what, she must do what needs to be done to survive -- to get back to her small son. There are plenty of passages that reveal her close and loving relationship with her son. The reader can feel her love for this great miniature human being. And it gives her the strength, the ingenuity to defeat an extremely formidable foe. Though at first I thought this book might be a little disappointing, I realize that all the lead up to the long finale was necessary. You can't feel sympathy and root for the heroine without depth and understanding of the character. That's what Hurwitz gives the reader. I also highly recommend his newest book, Orphan X. It is a kickass thriller that I think will be a series. So finally, I recommend Hurwitz. He gives you great story, great characters, vastly enjoyable and thrilling reads!

I have read most of Gregg Hurwitz's novels and always enjoyed them. Not this one. In fact, I kept checking page numbers hoping it would mercifully end.

The narrative lurched from one implausible situation to another even more implausible situation. It was like watching a movie where everyone on the theatre is yelling "...don't open that door!" and the heroine proceeds to then open the door and is astonished to find some horror staring her on the face.

The book was made even worse by constant maudlin references to cute--too cute--little Nicolas. I got that she loved and was close to her too cute little son after the first ten or so flashbacks. After that, I had to skip over those passages to keep from gagging from the sweetness.

Don't waste your time on this one. Instead, read one of Hurwitz's superlative other stories. Come on Gregg, you can do much better than this supermarket piece of garbage!

This is my favorite book of the year. What a thrillride!!!!!! Eve was about to celebrate her ten year anniversary with her husband Rick when he suddenly left her for his pretty little accountant. They had already paid for a week vacation in the jungles of Oaxaca, Mexico. It seemed to be a safe place far away from the narco violence. Or would it??????So eight months later Eve finds a babysitter for her son Nicholas since her ex has moved to Amsterdam with his new love and heads for Oaxaca
Eve arrives in the jungles of Oaxaca and heads to the Dias Felice Ecolodge. Neto and his wife Lulu are the owners and take Eve and the interesting and diverse group of five other travelers. Soon the days are filled with white water raft rides and zip lines into the river. One day on a picnic she heads a little deeper into the jungle and sees a small vine covered house in a small canyon and sees a threatening looking man target practicing with machetes on a wooden human shaped target. From Eve's viewpoint under a log she finds a camera with the name Theresa Hamilton on it.
Well I wont tell the whole story but this book is a thrillridge that you will be unable to put down.I loved this book absolutely engrossing and fantastic. I hated for it to end. Buy this book. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!!!!!
