One Christmas morning, while young Amish twins Henry and Harvey are sledding, they find a big black dog wandering in a field. They adopt the Newfoundland and name him Lucky, and he soon becomes their best friend and playmate. When tragedy strikes and Harvey drowns in a spring creek, Henry’s only source of comfort is his furry companion. To make matters worse, the Depression is especially hard on Henry’s parents who have more children than they can care for. He is sent to live with another family, where he becomes enchanted with Katie Stoltzfus. Eventually, Lucky passes away, leaving a hole in Henry’s heart, and he wonders if he will ever find another friend as faithful and loving. As Henry grows up, he has other dogs, but none are as special as the Newfoundland he and his brother once cherished. When Katie marries another man, it seems Henry will never be happy again. Every passing Christmas reminds him of the people and animal friends now missing from his life. Though, no holiday story is complete without a miracle. In A Dog for Christmas, bestselling author Linda Byler delivers a beautiful Christmas story of quiet triumph in the face of lifelong adversity. After years of loneliness and longing, Henry is finally rewarded with a hard-won love, a family to call his own, and a new best friend. Could there possibly be a better gift than that?
Linda Byler grew up Amish and is an active member of the Amish church today. She is the author of several bestselling fiction series, all set in the Amish world: Hester’s Hunt for Home, Lancaster Burning, Sadie’s Montana, and Lizzie Searches for Love. She has also written several Amish Christmas romance novels including Mary’s Christmas Goodbye, Little Amish Matchmaker, and Becky Meets Her Match. Linda is also well known within the Amish community as a columnist for a weekly Amish newspaper. She lives near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Through it all17 July 2019 - Published on Amazon.com
Should I take all of God’s blessings and then blame Him if things don’t go as I think they should. Henry learned to trust God in everything through the love and the tears. I’ve always had a dog but Max was my best dog. He died this past January.
Highly recommended30 December 2017 - Published on Amazon.com
Another captivating novella by a real Old Order Amish author. Since this delightful and touching story spans the seasons, it would be an enjoyable read all year long. Linda Byler is a skilled writer and demonstrates keen insights into human nature, plus realistic glimpses of Amish life.

A very good yet sad book17 March 2018 - Published on Amazon.com
A very good yet sad book. I liked it a lot but not as much as Linda Byler's other Christmas books, especially The Christmas visitor, my favorite. More of a biography than a story, as it told his whole life story in one book. Not what I expected.

I absolutely loved this book! I actually cried while I was reading it! This book showed that life is hard, but you can prevail because of God's love.
