Product description

Product Description

Dogs are faithful companion animals. Their willingness to defend us, our property and our resources may endear them to us but can, at times, make life difficult. On occasion dogs may display a growl, a lunge, a bite or even a full-scale dog attack. This behaviour then becomes a problem for owners and for society to deal with.

This book will help you understand what constitutes an aggression problem, what the cause of this problem may be and then help you implement solutions to reduce the chances of your dog biting – leading to a safer human and canine life.

A popular speaker and educator, Dr Joanne Righetti insists that no pet problem is too big, too small or too embarrassing to talk about. Even if your pet is already ‘perfect’, Dr Joanne will celebrate the joy, the fun & the love that our pets bring into our lives.

Dr Joanne Righetti is an animal behaviourist whose background is in zoology, with a PhD in animal behaviour and a counselling diploma – qualifications which enable her to work with all sorts of animals – including the human variety.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solving Dog Aggression Problems by Dr Jo Righetti 20 November 2012
By Mira Poodle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Another well written, easy to read and follow book by Dr Jo in the Pet Problems series.
The way Dr Jo steps through all the questions and explanations, leaves no room for error in deciding what is contributing to your dogs aggression and the best ways to deal and train with him.Common sense and achievable techniques to help overcome aggression which may be a natural behaviour, a learned experience,a reactive behaviour or a problem behaviour. What it is, how to deal with it,long and short term managememnt - makes this a must have book for anyone that owns a dog with some sort of behaviour that may have been labelled aggression. When you finish reading you feel so much better equipped to deal with a very common problem which should be addressed with the hands on knowledge and experience Dr Jo has put to paper in this great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound advice 24 April 2013

Best advice on handling dog aggression I've read. With a newly adopted 8 year old rescue, who had little training in his earlier life, I found there were many insights into changing his behaviour problems to make his life ( and ours) more acceptable.
An excellent book which we found very helpful. The instructions were clear and well explained in managing out beautiful boy! Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you have real problems, don't waste your time on this book! 26 January 2013

I've recently been compiling a list of helpful books to recommend to participants in an online chat forum about dogs. This book will not make the cut. The author does not seem to have the skills to work a dog through a real aggression problem, and strikes me as a "cookie pusher". Not all problems are solved with positive reward training, and this book offers no real solutions to actually fix an issue. It becomes repetitive... positive reinforcement for good behavior... but ignores the important fact that undesirable behavior should be corrected. The author even goes so far as to suggest that correcting bad behavior can make a dog more aggressive. For any non dog savvy owner, this paints a bleak picture, and could even encourage owners to become fearful of their dog to the point that they are afraid to take control and reprimand the dog. Some years ago, we encountered an issue with one of our dogs, and overpaid a behaviorist to come in and spout off the rhetoric found in this book. She deduced that the dog was beyond help and should be rehomed or euthanized... Thankfully, we moved on to a wonderful trainer who was able to teach us to relate to our dogs in a healthy, balanced and authoritative fashion. Since then, we have successfully rehabilitated many dogs, and that original problem dog is 10years old and a joy. If you have an aggressive dog, you do not need to resort to yelling, hitting, and otherwise abusing your pet, however, you do not have to tolerate your dog running the show. Look to other training books to find out how.
