Amongst stories that you might expect such as rescuing presents or finding some element of Christmas spirit, a few stories stand out by offering a little more. Perhaps, the highlight, mainly for its cleverness, is ‘The Christmas Inversion’. Riffing the title idea from ‘The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion’, it revisits the Tenth Doctor Christmas special ‘The Christmas Invasion’. Amusingly this leaves the Third Doctor, Jo and Mike at the mercy of Jackie Tyler who, after recently learning of regeneration, believes the three of them to be the regenerated versions of Rose. Mickey and the Doctor. In a collection where the humour doesn’t always work or is orientated at a younger audience, this scenario makes the story generally witty.
‘The Persistence of Memory’ featuring the Twelfth Doctor is also one of the more ‘memorable’ due to its link with the programme’s return in 2005 and a surprise appearance.
Having twelve Doctors seems to work out quite conveniently for the theme of this selection; much as it does for calendars. Of course, though, the reality is that with the revelation that there was another, unknown to the viewer, incarnation of the Doctor during the Time War, there was only just a brief period in the real world where there were actually only twelve versions of the Doctor. Thus, the fabulous War Doctor gets omitted. However, that aspect of the Doctor isn’t completely ignored as the Eighth Doctor story takes place during the Time War.
Rather than ploughing through, it is best read in the way it is formatted. It works well reading one story a day over the Christmas period as if each were a little present from the Doctor.
Book had some wear on the edges and corners. Other than that, value for money purchase and excellent seller!
