The story follows Dr Nona Oben, as a cruise ship doctor embarking on a cruise with what seem like strange omens from the start. But this is a grounded tale of developing romance that is more real in its approach than many romance novels which often find themselves in far more fantastical and unbelievable waters. Instead this is a romantic journey but laced with a very modern touch where by popular real life concerns gain the spot light, ie, work consuming your time, family consuming your mind, conflict consuming your energy, and amongst those, poses the question of what room is there to find someone to share everything with. It doesn't shy away from the detail, from the conversations with family, to the medical knowledge that is woven into the life of Dr Oben. But it is not pointless over descriptive detail, but just apt to colour in the reality of all of the things that we feel we juggle in our minds in dealing with our lives that can interrupt the pursuit of things like finding that special someone. For that reason this feels like a real contemporary narrative of a forming relationship. It goes so far as to show the funny tiffs modern relationships can experience that seem to not have much grounding at all, that you look back on and think what was all that about, but that is on display at times, and gives that sense of dejavu to real life and puts the spotlight on our vulnerabilities as we pursue this open hearted game.
Thats the deeper feel of the book, but throughout it is simply a very enjoyable read, well balanced with story, emotion and even intrigue, which for me made this a book to escape into. Every time I see a cruise ship now I think about the doctor that must be on board and what drama is unfolding for them.

Really enjoyed this book - the characters and storylines mature into a well rounded novel which is a credit to the young author.
