See the best of Paris!
Notre-Dame's interior grandeur is instantly apparent on seeing the high-vaulted central nave. This is bisected by a huge transept, at either end of which are medieval rose windows, 43 feet in diameter. Works by major sculptors adorn the cathedral.
It is 387 steps up the north tower to reach the famous gargoyles.
Getting to know Paris
Paris is a patchwork of neighborhoods, each with a history and essence all its own. the Seine runs through the heart of the city, creating its Right and Left banks, while the main sightseeing areas are enclosed by the Périphérique, a ring road that separates the city center from the suburbs.
Located at the heart of Paris, Île de la Cité & Île Saint-Louis are cornucopias of must-see sights, including the Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle.
A Short Walk: Île de la Cité
The origins of Paris are here on the Île de la Cité, the boat-shaped island on the Seine first inhabited over 2,000 years ago by Celtic tribes. There is no older place in Paris, and remains of the first buildings can still be seen today in the archaeological crypt under the square in front of Notre-Dame.

Place de la Bastille
This busy square was the scene of one of the most important events in French history — the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. Little trace of the infamous prison remains, and today the square is a hub for nightlife and cultural events such as concerts.
At the center of the large square that marks the site of the prison is the Colonne de Juillet. Topped by the elegant, gilded statue of the winged 'genius of liberty', this column of hollow bronze reaches 166 feet into the sky. It is a memorial to those who died in the street battles of July 1830 that led to the overthrow of the monarch.
Situated atop the hill of Montmartre, the spectacular white basilica of the Sacré-Coeur watches over Paris from the city's highest point. It stands as a memorial to the 58,000 French soldiers killed during the Franco-Prussian war.
The best view of the Sacré-Coeur is from the gardens below, but for a 360-degree panorama of the city, climb the 300 steps to the top of the Basilica dome.
Beyond the Center
The area beyond the Périphérique (ring road) once served as a country retreat for the aristocracy, with the Château de Vincennes as the royal residence. Today the varied neighborhoods of the suburbs are home to the vast majority of Paris's citizens.

Improved a lot since the 2005 version with its glossy pages that smudged when I highlighted them.
This book is informative (to newbie travelers like myself), and looks great at the same time.
Oragnized by neighborhood.
Maps give a good visual. There is a paris metro map included in the back flap of the book, which I appreciate.
I used to love this guide. My husband and I bought it almost every year. This edition is terrible, dull, and mediocre.
