Product Description

Devonshire, England, 1820

Determined to avoid the strife-filled marriage of his parents, Marcus, the Duke of Ulvercombe, wants an amenable, biddable wife, and has set his cap for a certain pretty miss. Unfortunately, her vastly opinionated, frustrating, and lamentably beautiful guardian, Lady Clara Tinniswood, keeps distracting him, tempting him to consider a far more tempestuous—and passionate—union.

Recently widowed Lady Clara Tinniswood wants only to organize a quiet new life for herself, beyond the control of any man. But one shockingly unguarded moment while confronted by Marcus’s gloriously naked body catapults her headlong into a forbidden passion and threatens to undermine all her well-laid plans.

Even if Marcus abandons his sweet ideal and surrenders to his growing desire for Clara, there's one unalterable issue which could destroy their hopes forever...

It's 1820 and Lady Clara's husband Simon passed away, which means she's free of his horrors. She finally has the chance to be her own woman and doesn't want another man in her life. Her family's fortunes are in trouble and their ward has a good chance to be officially courted by Marcus, the Duke of Ulvercombe. They can't think of a better match and it would mean a happier and independent future for Clara and financial relief for her brother and his wife. Making sure their ward spends enough time with Marcus numerous visits are being arranged.

Marcus is looking for a wife. He wants a family and children and is determined to find someone he genuinely likes instead of having an arranged marriage that is a good business deal. Therefore he's looking for a gentle woman who won't disagree with him. He doesn't want any fights in his home and is looking for a nice peaceful life. When he meets Clara there's a spark, but she has a fiery character and is the exact opposite of the kind of future wife he is looking for. Is Marcus prepared to change his wishes to be with the woman who makes his heart beat faster and if so does he have a chance with Clara? She makes it clear she doesn't want to get married again, so is he willing to go to great lengths to convince her she's the woman for him?

Distracting the Duke is a wonderful romantic story. Clara is a damaged woman. Simon was a scary man and he hurt her badly. She's afraid of all men because of what he's done to her and I had tears in my eyes when I read about what kind of man he was. Clara is smart and isn't afraid to speak her mind. She's also kind and caring and hides her lovely personality behind a prickly attitude.

This is the author's debut novel, although she has been active on Wattpad for several years.

Clara is a widow and determined to stay that way after a horrific marriage which culminated in a betrayal that cut to her heart. She appears hard and little cynical when we first meet her but we soon learn this is a front to cover the scars of her marriage.

Marcus has his own scars from an unhappy childhood. He is determine not to make the mistakes his parents made resulting in a marriage full of strife and anger. He has only recently restored the family fortunes to something reasonable so the logical choice would be an heiress. Luckily there is one in the neighbourhood.

Ellie is the ward of Clara and her brother Philip. The family is almost destitute in gentry terms, living quietly in the country. Ellie's inheritance is years away so the best hope is for her to make an eligible marriage. Luckily there is a Duke in the neighbourhood.

Marcus and Clara strike sparks from each other from the first meeting. She considers him rigid and unfriendly. He thinks her too stubborn and argumentative. All the same, they can't seem to stay away from each other. As Marcus endeavours to get to know his potential bride, he also gets to know Clara and learns a lot about her vulnerabilities and eventually her past and Clara too learns to understand him better.

This is an opposites attract story with the complication that he is supposed to be pursuing her ward in terms of matrimony while very, very attracted to Clara, despite the fact she is not at all the kind of wife he would consider.

This was a lovely little story. A little uneven at times and the wavering back and forth of both Clara and Marcus was a little too much at times. I'm not a big fan of triangles but the relationship with Ellie was not of the kind to cause me any qualms. A satisfactory ending to a well written debut.

I received a copy for an independent review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read 7 April 2017

The majority of the novel was enjoyable, however, the ending was dragged out . In fact, the ending was over done and illogical since it required a mother ( the heroine's sister) to willingly give up her child.

This book was boring, the story was nothing like the blurb leads you to believe....I bought this because so many reviews said that there was witty repartee....well, there is none. The characters are mostly idiotic...and the herione is the worst. Do yourself a favour and don't buy this!

Distracting the Duke is a wonderful romantic story. Clara is a damaged woman. Simon was a scary man and he hurt her badly. She's also kind and caring and hides her lovely personality behind a prickly attitude. I loved the endless discussions she has with Marcus, Elizabeth Keysian writes with a great sense of humor and I had a lot of fun reading their dialogue. Marcus is a gentleman with a friendly character. He tries to remain polite and calm and doesn't show the sweet side of his personality to everyone. Because of this he keeps surprising Clara. He can see straight through her behavior, which made their connection even more interesting. They have plenty of chemistry and they are quite evenly matched. I equally loved both of their characters and enjoyed reading their story very much.

Elizabeth Keysian's vivid descriptions of her characters and their surroundings immediately make her story come to life. Distracting the Duke is entertaining and vibrant. It was fun to read about the beautiful houses, fascinating business transactions, amazing artwork, fabulous clothes and delicious food and drinks. There's also a layer of depth, because of Clara's awful past and the impact it has on her future and Marcus's difficult childhood. Elizabeth Keysian writes about it in an empathic way, which makes the story well balanced. I really liked this spellbinding love story and highly recommend it.
5.0 out of 5 stars It was he perfect first book of Ms. Keysian's to read and I can't wait to read more of her! 25 February 2017

I have been in the mood to read historicals this past month, so I must confess that I didn't even read the synopsis for Distracting the Duke before deciding to read it and while that can be a gamble that doesn't always pay off with some books, it certainly did with this one! I figured I would enjoy it, but I had no idea how much I would actually come to love it and love it I did. Distracting the Duke was positively fantastic and I was so happy with it!

I liked Clara - she's tough and strong, but she also has her vulnerabilities and insecurities that get to you. She's passionate and feisty and she doesn't let Marcus get away with anything simply because he's a duke. Clara might have her doubts about herself and she might try to remain unaffected by Marcus sometimes, but she is warm and has a good heart. She's truly wonderful and I loved, admired, and respected Clara!

There might have been a few times when Marcus made me roll my eyes and want to shake him, but the more I saw of him, the more I loved him. Yes, he doesn't always make the best decisions and he'll frustrate you every now and then, but there's so much more to Marcus than there appears to be when we first meet him. He's charming and funny and playful; he's generous, compassionate, and kind. Marcus is such an amazing hero, he knows exactly what to say, he knows when to give and when to comfort, and he completely and utterly stole my heart. I didn't see it coming, but I absolutely, without one single doubt love that man!

Distracting the Duke is fun, light, and entertaining, but it is serious and has heartache too. It made me laugh, it squeezed my heart and made it skip a beat. I had the best time reading it with all the banter and the teasing and so much more. It was beautiful and heartwarming and entirely fabulous. Distracting the Duke was the perfect first book of Ms. Keysian's to read and I can't wait to read more of her!

Distracting the Duke is a standalone, it's told from Marcus and Clara's POV, and their happy ending left me with a big old smile on my face!

What do you do when you need a wife but want one that is agreeable, biddable…you go for the women you want but find what really attracts you is the opposite. Marcus for the life of him can’t understand why Clara holds so much appeal she isn’t at all what he is looking for. Clara has had enough of controlling men. When her husband died she said enough is enough and decided to have a nice quite life man free. Clara is everything Marcus doesn’t want in a woman she is opinionated, outspoken and shoots from the hip not caring what anything thinks. Clara isn’t interested in any men but dang if Marcus doesn’t get under her collar.

They just can’t seem to stay away from each other as they go head to head, toe to toe arguing and disagreeing. You won’t get them to agree but they enjoy this bickering back and forward. They keep taking steps away from each other but seem to find they take more towards each other. How can two be that are so wrong for each other be so attracted to each other. When they finally face facts there seems to be no hope for them since one need to get married and the other never wants to get married. Heck they might be attacked to each other but Marcus refuses to marry a woman he doesn’t like it’s never going to happen and Clara will never trust another man as long as there is breath in her body. You know what they say about saying NEVER……

I really liked the characters the author gives a wonderful plot that is full of excitement. I loved watching these to go at it both making their own demands. Maraca is very controlling not asking but taking what he wants, very alpha male. Where Clara stands up to him putting him in his place. What is there not to love about these two who give you such an exciting read. The characters were delightful and highly entertaining with all the bickering back and forward I was hooked and could not put the book down. For a debut novel you can tell the author put a lot of time and thought into writing this. I am not much on conflict and drama in my life but lord I love it in my books. I really enjoyed this found it to be a very fun read filled with humor, romance that was very entertaining. I feel most will really enjoy this and the author should be proud of herself. GREAT JOB!
