“I will always be with you…”

Rising Democratic star Caroline Gerard hasn’t had an easy year. After losing her husband, she is raising two small children alone while trying to navigate the tricky and sometimes shallow halls on Capitol Hill. A string of nasty speeches has her scrambling to apologize to any number of candidates, including newly elected Republican Jack McIntyre. Falling in love again is the last thing on her mind.

Jack McIntyre might have a reputation as a playboy, but he has his sights set solely on his new colleague. Can he break through Caroline’s grief and capture her heart?

Told mostly in flashback and set against a chilling fascist backdrop, Dissident is a rollercoaster ride of political intrigue, passionate contemporary romance, and undying love.

For readers 18+. Ends on a cliffhanger.

So just jumping into this blind was probably not a good idea or maybe it was. The prologue was fantastic and set a great scene for the start of a book.
Then it just got really confusing for me over the following couple of chapters trying to get a hold on all the political talk, slowly starting to make sense the more I read.
It is told in the third person which I am usually not fond of but as there was so much going on at times I didn't mind much. This story was also told in past and present with it mainly being told from the past so we get the start of Jack and Carolines relationship. I found the parts told from the present to be a little confusing and I wasn't sure what was going on.
I thought that Caroline and Jack had lots of chemistry, during the book it did get a little hearts and flowers which I was not expecting from a book with such a intense prologue as this had. I enjoyed reading about Caroline and Jacks relationship my one major frustration with this was the teasing. Each time they were getting hot and heavy and it was just about to get good ;) it would STOP. If you know me at all you know I like a little bedroom action in books. I will and have read books with no sex in them and love those books but I am not expecting it to be there either. There is no love in me for the teasing that happened throughout this book.
To sum up my confusing opinion of this book, I think it was a well laid out start to what looks like an intense drama series. I enjoy a mature drama and this seemed to be heading in the right direction. This book had a fantastic start, slow middle and ended the way it started.

I am going to attempt the next one when I am in the right mood, not sure I can handle more of the political talk it seemed to really erk me. I may have to add politics to my trigger list with religion.

I received free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This story commenced with Caroline and Jack running for their lives and I was instantly pulled in. Life in America is changing dramatically under President Santos (is our author a West Wing fan?) and California has broken away from the USA.

Soon after beginning the story takes us back 5 years to when Caroline meets Jack. I was initially annoyed with this. I wanted to know what was going on now. Ultimately the story switches between the past where we experience Caroline and Jack falling in love and the present where Caroline is unconscious and the doctors trying to keep her out of the hands of the military.

The romance between Caroline and Jack is wonderful and a great example of a slowly built relationship. The author shows us so much of them and their lives and insecurities. Lots of fabulous, honest conversations. I loved reading about a mature relationship, characters with intelligence, lives and baggage.

The mix of political drama, danger and romance is perfect and I eagerly await the next instalment of The Bellator Saga so I can find out what is going to happen next.
