My daughter reads all these books - in an 'escapist' sort of way - and with nothing particular to immerse myself in a couple of weeks ago, thought I would try one. No thanks. Just too nasty, no literary merit whatsoever, repeated overuse of the F-word (yes, I know it is common these days, but it just becomes tedious) predictable, hammy characters and plot, and that's being generous, calling it a 'plot', grisly violence, just, no.

Not really my kind of reading but it was recommended and I was told to stick at it and read the series. Not into gangster themes but once two thirds through the story,it was quite interesting ... I will continue

Gimmee more and more!!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 May 2012
I read this book a while ago and gave it to a friend along with the other two in the series, which are just such great reads. So much so, that I have bought them again for my husband, who has read the first one, Dirty Game over the weekend, and he's not a great reader! He can't wait to get stuck into the next one. These books have you gripped for the first page and they are so fabulously written. Annie and Max are great characters that you get to know and love so easily. If you've read this one don't forget to get Black Widow and Scarlet Woman too. There's a follow up later, called Playing Dead, which is fab too. Can't wait for Nameless - out 30th August 2012!

Better than Martina!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2011
This is one of 4 books about the Carters. I read them all in the wrong order, reading the last one first, then the 3rd one and finally this one and then the 2nd one but it didn't matter as each book has it's own story. It is set in the East End and follows Annie Carter. This book tells how she met her husband who was the head of the Carter family. I couldn't put it down and read the 4 books one after the other. Am now starting on her other books.
