I mentioned my son has autism, which of course includes many sensory issues also seen in sensory processing disorders and often OCD or ADHD. He has struggled significantly with wearing denim jeans but that is thankfully the only type of fabric issue we’ve ever had... until this shirt. And here’s the thing. I’ve never needed to buy an expensive or specially made shirt for my son. He grows so fast, I buy him the cute $4 shirts at Walmart and he’s always been fine with them. Some are pretty soft, others not so much at all and are made of a cheap fabric that is mildly rough feeling but it’s never been an issue. This shirt however has to have been made of the cheapest, roughest fabric in the world. As soon as my son started begging for help taking his new favorite shirt right back off, I began inspecting it and immediately felt that the fabric wasn’t just stiff like your average cheap shirt, it was extremely stiff, extremely rough compared to regular cheap shirts even! While my son is still working on his communication, he expressed that he did not like to wear the shirt but he liked how it looked and I can put 2 + 2 together here and realize that this shirt was so uncomfortable that it became the first shirt ever that he could not tolerate wearing.
I attempted washing it with fabric softener and drying it, and can tell you that the shirt made it through a regular wash and dryer cycle in one piece. It may have shrunk but if so only slightly which was surprising. The fabric softener and fluff drying did make the fabric feel slightly softer to the touch, but after washing it I realize that it’s the decals in particular that are so rough feeling, much more so than any of my sons other shirts with decals, and washing and drying it did not help that part at all as I wouldn’t expect it to.
So I’m sad to say I’ll be donating this one. If the child you want to purchase for has any sort of sensory processing issues— even if they can usually tolerate any tee shirt without issue!— or if the child has any skin conditions like eczema, sensitive/itchy skin, any skin issues at all, this shirt might not work for them. Of course you can always try and return/donate if necessary but if your child loves the shirt but has a reaction to it, it could be challenging having to take it away. So while I don’t think I’ve ever posted a “warning” type of review before I did want to post this for other parents, anyone who cares for a child who might really love this shirt but might not be able to tolerate wearing it.
If the child you wish to purchase for is neurotypical (meaning not affected by autism or any related disorders) and has no skin conditions to consider, then I think this shirt is pretty good for such a child especially given the price. Mine did not fall apart after being washed as another reviewer experienced. And for better or worse this is pretty much the only Dinotrux shirt available through the biggest sellers (ie Walmart, Amazon, Target) so if it works for your child than thank goodness this one is still being sold! But if it doesn’t work for your child then it’s pretty disappointing because you can’t just try a different one. My son isn’t familiar with really any of the popular characters/franchises that the kids at his school love, the only other show he has watched in the last 3 years was paw patrol and most of the kids his age seem to be like him and outgrowing that one. I was so happy that he would finally have a shirt from a recent kids show that he not only has seen and knows about but a show he loves! I guess it wasn’t meant to be though. I hope this shirt works for your little Dinotrux fan though. And I hope this review helps someone, somewhere! :)
Ps My photos were taken just now after having washed and dried the shirt once. For obvious reasons I wasn’t able to get a picture of my son wearing it! I also just now realized that despite the shirt being listed as size “4-6” the tag of the shirt says “Small (4)”. So the tag is correct that’s exactly how it fits. However the tag goes on to claim the shirt is 100% cotton which I am absolutely certain it is NOT, the only way that could be possible is if the manufacturers process involves completely ruining the “cotton” while turning it into a shirt as this feels nothing like any other 100% cotton shirt I’ve ever felt.
Pss. Amazon has the new feature to add the customers height and weight for sizing but won’t let me enter a weight below 50 pounds as I guess they’re expecting this shirt to have been for an adult only? My son is currently 46” tall (3 ft 10”) and weighs around 42 pounds. He’s on the tall/skinny range for his age. The small fit him perfectly for the very few seconds he wore it, and lines up similarly in size to other 5T/Boys XS/Boys 4 shirts he currently fits.
